Workshop A

The workshop A, typographic hierarchy, was divided into 2 parts. Part 1 is a group work creating a poster and part 2 is individual work on folding poster. Before part 1 started, Susannah gave a little lecture to the group. I find like a reminder of things I have been taught. There were things in it that I taught I remember but I actually forgot. Keep things simple, use weight, size, isolation, density, positive and negative space etc.

Then the class was divided into groups to work on poster that emphasize one thing from the information given. My group was assigned to emphasize on ‘where’. First, we decided to work separately but close to each other so that we can see what the other person is doing. We, my group, tried to work on different emphasis tool so that we can see variety of the possible outcome and would be easier for us to decide which direction we want to continue working on.

“Typography workshop? Of course, I would love to do it. I have been working with type for years. Picking a nice recently released font and moving it around in computer. I have not got a chance to do it for quite a while so let’s do this workshop”.

That was what I thought I am going to be doing in the workshop. Honestly I have not read the brief carefully and clearly. But then I read it after I signed up for it and it mentioned ‘primarily lo-tech techniques’ and I said “Oh no. Am I really going to do that?”. But obviously I did.

I was kind of not sure if I can survive the workshop when I know that the method we are going to be use to create the poster is by using a photocopy machine. But then after 20 minutes of working I started to feel that I am enjoying it. I find that I actually thought a lot before I do things. I even surprised that I ended up created options that I do not sure if I would do on computer. I distort, twist, and play with it the way I would not do on my computer because it was too hard to make it in control. I even thought that maybe the too in control part is the one that always hold you back from pushing things further.

Then I would like to just skip to the part of the workshop A that I find most useful, the folding poster. I always wonderabout piece of work that works as a folding piece and as a spread out. This curiosity has been bugging me all the time of how could one possiblyknow that how should it be. Then it was Eugenie who lighted up the answer, the text will show you how it should be.

I think at this point I learned a lot about really consider what is the message that has to be shown. Carefully read theinformation and dividing it into groups and arrange it in order. Then you can actuallysort of see the structure of the folded poster. Lo-tech technique detour, a reminding lecture and a lot of practice in the first poster actually really help. I find myself more carefulabout putting things in to places. Ask myself more about why I do it, do I need it and is it really necessary to do it.

Workshop B

The workshop B is about sequence. Expressing story through type. The first exercise was for the class to listen to a BBC play call Under Milkwoodby Dylan Thomas. The play was in Welsh accent. It was really hard to catch up a word but that does not really matter. The more we listen to it the more we kind of get the situation.

With this exercise I was kind of all over the place. I combined everything to express the part of the play my group chose. Typeface, weight, repetition,size, isolation etc. Even though I have got the result that looks like throwing everything in it but that is when I learn that less is really more and I should use what I learn from the workshop A.

Then on the assignment for the workshop B, we have to record conversations and then create a 12 pages newspaper of type sequence expressing part of the conversation we picked. My group had so much fun recording conversations. We went into the Tesco in Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre and got a conversationof people inside. It was between 2 black women and a man. They were speaking with a British/African accent. So it was kind of hard to transcribe words out of it. But the tone of their voice is doing its job. We were still kind of able to guess the conversation.

For the first draft of the design, we decided to work separately on it so that we have more options to decide which are the ideas we like to keep and which are not. My first drafts were kind of a mess. They were a mixture of too many things, again. I did not realize it until my group presented our designs to the class.

And there we were, trying to get our head back in the game to get the design right. We set up a rule/system to keep it simple; 14pt Univers Roman. It turned out that they look pretty good and expressive enough to communicate the conversation. Then we discussedabout adding another rule to the system. We were thinking colour, weight, size etc. but then we agreed that we do not need more. It works as it is.

At the end of the workshop, I think I have got a new most useful rule for myself. Makingone change at a time and make it obvious. If it do not make much different then do not do it. And the most important thing is do not add things to your work until you find good reason to do so.
