Why Twitter

Tip #1

Set up your Twitter profile. Include your location, a description and choose a professionally appropriate avatar.

Tip #2

Get Twitter on Your Website. Add a “Tweet This” button and tell your visitors how to follow you.

Tip #3

Post regularly and learn to craft short and succinct updates. As always, humor, controversy and thought-provoking stuff gets attention.

Tip #4

Be approachable. While you may not be able respond to every reply or retweet, take the time to answer questions and say thank you now and then.

Tip #5

Twitter isn’t really made for an ongoing conversation. If you want to speak to someone directly and it takes more than 140 characters, take the conversation off your stream.

Tip #6

Want to send a public message to someone on Twitter? Use @username and they’ll see you in their stream.

Tip #7

Hashtags are a great way to contribute and start group discussions certain topics. They are a keyword phrase with a # in front of it.

You can put them in your posts and click them to see what other people are talking about.

Tip #8

Saved Searches allow you to keep tabs on conversations on specific topics.

Tip #9

Use the search function to answer relevant questions in your subject area…but don’t just plug a product.

Be helpful!

Tip #10

Creating Twitter lists helps you follow certain topics and allows you to showcase people you think are worth following.

Tip #11

Create a public list of people in your organization, so your followers can get to know all of you better.

Tip #12

If you like a tweet, you can share it with your followers by doing a “retweet.”

Tip #13

Encourage others to retweet your content, by making short updates (about 120 characters).

And, of course, tweet great stuff!

Tip #14

Follow like-minded people and businesses on Twitter. It keeps it interesting, gives you content to share and encourages others to follow you.

Tip #15

Share your “Follow Friday” recommendations. Tell your followers who they should follow, why and include the #ff hashtag.

What comes around, goes around.

Tip #16

Track your links and keep stats of your participation in Twitter.
