Key Findings

Oral Health Status

Tooth decay is still a significant public health problem affecting more than half of Illinois third grade children

Important improvements in the percentage of children with untreated decay in the last decade

Around half of Illinois third graders have dental sealants present

Approximately 3,000 third graders are sitting in the classroom with pain and infection

Oral Health Status

Significant oral health inequalities are affecting children from vulnerable populations:

African American children– Untreated Decay

Latino children – Caries Experience

Children from low income families

Children living in Suburban Cook County and rural Illinois

Growth Status

1 out-of 3 Illinois third grade children is either overweight or obese

1 out-of 3 Latino third grade children in Illinois is obese

Almost half of Chicago third graders are either overweight or obese
