Towards modeling the self-assembly of largespace apertures

Gwendolyn B. JohnsonCalifornia Institute of Technology

An overview of the goals and activities Keck Institute for Space Studies(KISS), at the California Institute of Technology, will be presented. This overview will be accompanied by a summary of the work done inthe last year by the Self-Assembling Large Space Telescope TechnologyDevelopment Group, one of three technology development groupsfunded by KISS. One particular thrust of this group, which will bediscussed in detail, is the development of numerical tools to study andvalidate the self-assembly of very large structures in space. These toolsinclude fast, robust, and structure-preserving contact algorithms forrigid body dynamics and finite element models, as well as numericalmethods for performance certification and system optimization.
