MADELEINE KUNIN

Vermont’s first female and first Jewish governor, in office from 1985-1991. Her expansive political career included serv-ing as the Lieutenant Governor of Vermont, the U.S. Ambas-sador to Switzerland, Clinton’s deputy secretary of education, and a Vermont State Representative. Kunin also published her third book this year titled “The New Feminist Agenda: De-fining the Next Revolution for Women, Work, and Family”.

A State Representative serving Burlington’s Hill Sec-tion, Old North End, and University. Additionally, she is a member of the Ways & Means Committee, a Civic En-gagement Specialist, and Community Organizer. Elect-ed in 2008, Kesha is the youngest legislator in Vermont.

JILL KROWINSKI

After being appointed to the VT House of Representatives assigned to the Human Services Committee last February by Governor Shumlin, Jill finished strong in the race for the House, winning another term serving downtown and the Old North End. Jill is also the Director of Vermont Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, a Fletch-er Free Library Commissioner, an Advisory Board member of Vermont Access to Reproductive Freedom, and serves on the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra Board.

I moved to the Detroit metro area from New York City in the late 1990s, and lived there for twelve years. I’d always felt a connection to Detroit, as my father was born there. I’d grown up hearing stories of my grandmother working as a pharmacist downtown, of my father nav-igating the city by bus as a young child, of the nickel seats at Tiger Stadium, of the friends and neighbors who had various jobs in the auto industry. When I saw what Detroit had become, a city of sports arenas and office buildings juxtaposed with urban decay beyond anything I could ever imagine, I was compelled to take my camera and photograph what I was feeling: anger, sadness, and utter disbelief. Composing the photos, I considered what had happened: economic downturn and resulting population decline; corruption and mismanagement of city resources; poverty and despair. I photographed the empty streets: once bustling indus-trial corridors, once neighborhoods. I photographed inside abandoned auto factories and schools and churches, listening to wind blowing through the buildings, trying to capture on film the enormity of what I was seeing through my viewfinder. I went to the address where my father had lived and found a vacant lot between one abandoned house and one occupied house. I’d photograph things that seemed frozen in time, only to return a day or a month later and find that everything had changed. I’d regularly say I was finished photographing Detroit – it was too dangerous and emotionally draining. But then, I’d find myself once again

standing there on the street with my camera, compelled to continue recording it all.
