Subaru’s Synergy with TMT
• Direct imaging of exoplanets and exploration of life outside of the solar system
• Uncover the first born star/galaxy• Understand dark matter and dark energy
Subaru Telescope(8.2m)
Discovery of numerous galaxies approximately 13 billion light-years away
Successful direct imaging of exoplanets
Science goals of TMT
TMT will attempt to solve the mysteries of universe uncovered by Subaru Telescope
Exploration of the accelerating universe based on wide field galaxy survey using HSC/PFS

TMT Backup PlanSite Other than Hawaii
Construction in Hawaii is still the first choice, but a course of action must be considered in case construction in Hawaii is deemed not possible. Each partner country is in the process of compiling opinions on this issue.
Schedule proposed by TMT International Observatory:Oct 26~27, 2016 Board meeting: Narrow down alternate sites (cf. La Palma @Spain, SPM @Mexico, MacKenna & Honar @Chile) for the backup plan
The conditions and timing for the decision on whether or not to construct in Hawaii (switch to BackupPlan) is under discussion
ß For Japan, Hawaii is very essential, it is not easy to change the plan.TMT-J SAC holds several meetings to understand the current status of TMT project and to make decision on the direction regarding the following to prepare for the possibility of construction not taking place in Hawaii (Aug 2 Kyoto, Sep 1 Sendai, Sep 6 Hilo, Sep 9 Tokyo, Sep 12 Hiroshima).Discussions continue at TMT SAC meetings (last one on Sep 26th)
