Fairy TaleIrony

InferenceTheme

Irony - when the opposite of what is expected fits the situation

STAAR question words for “inference”

• infer•suggest•hinted at• implied

What can we infer about you from your environment? What is hanging on the walls? What colors are the décor? What is on the floor? What is on the surface of the desk, chest

of drawers, bedside table etc.?What is in the shelves? What is under the bed? What is in the closet?

How can we tell…

• if you are a boy or girl?• what your talents are?• what your interests are?• whether you share a room and with whom?• what your habits are?• what is your age?

… without being told.

Remember:

Don’t tell us about yourself; show us. We will make the inferences.

No: “I am athletic.” Yes: “There are trophies on the shelf for volleyball and

basketball.”No: “I am messy.”Yes: “There are dirty clothes on the floor, coke cans on

the bedside table, and a pizza box under the bed.

Rules for inference activity:List 8 to 10 things we would see if we walked into your room.

No name on paper.

No guessing who until asked after inferences have been made.

No hollering out!!!

Keep a “poker face.”

Don’t look around at class

or stare at anyone.
