OXYGEN PROFILE

The Universe Air Human Body

is the year oxygen was discovered, although there is a lot of controversy around the element's discovery. The Swedish pharmacist Carl Wilhelm Scheele described what he called "fire air" in his Treatise on Air and Fire while, independent of each other, the British clergyman Joseph Priestly and the French chemist Antoine Lavoisier both claimed to have discovered the element oxygen at about the same time as Scheele.

While making up about 1% of the Universe and a little less than 1% of the Sun, oxygen constitutes 21% of the air we breathe and 61% of our bodies.
