Our “THANK YOU” Newsletter - June 2015
WE DID IT!
At last year’s breakfast, JOHN HERCUS, the chair of The
Pinehurst Club™ Breakfast, issued a challenge to The
Pinehurst Club™ members to reach for and surpass the
$1,000,000 milestone of funds raised at the breakfasts for
Sleeping Children’s LEGACY FUND.
WE DID IT! As a reminder, all those who bought a seat or
table or made a donation to The Pinehurst Club™ are
“members” of The Pinehurst Club™. So, when we say
“WE” – we mean ALL members of The Pinehurst Club™.
On May 6th, John presented a cheque to the members of the
Dryden Family for $1,000,000 representing the total raised at the 7 Pinehurst Club Breakfasts since
2009. In fact, when all the funds were added up, we surpassed the million dollar milestone by at least
another $20,000!
To all those who attended the breakfast and/or supported The Pinehurst Club™, SCAW says “THANKS
A MILLION” for making the breakfast such a success and for meeting the $1,000,000 challenge.
“In every child who is born, under no matter what circumstances, and of no matter what parents, the potentiality of
the human race is born again.” - James Agee
PINEHURST SPONSORS—THANKS A MILLION!
Our Corporate Sponsors cover all the expenses for our breakfast thus allowing 100% of the proceeds from
the sale of seats, tables, and raffle tickets to go to SCAW’s Legacy Fund. This year, we had nine
Corporate Sponsors who provided $5,000 each. We say “THANKS A MILLION” to CANWORLD
FOODS LTD., CARGILL MEAT SOLUTIONS, CHOICE HOTELS CANADA, KINGSDOWN,
MACGREGORS MEAT & SEAFOOD LTD., McRAE COLD STORAGE, SLEEP COUNTRY,
TEMPUR + SEALY, and TD BANK.
The Dryden Clan accepts $1,000,000 for
investment in Legacy Fund.

REMEMBER THE DIME!
Our keynote speaker, FRANK O’DEA, shared the story of his journey from a
flophouse in Toronto to Rideau Hall in Ottawa where he received the Order of
Canada.
At the age of 23, in desperate circumstances, at the corner of King and Yonge
Streets, someone dropped a dime in his hand - the dime that allowed him to make
a phone call to Alcoholics Anonymous.
The person who dropped the dime into Frank’s hand had no idea the difference
that dime made in Frank’s life. Frank reminded us that, when we give a gift of a
bedkit, we will have no idea of the difference that our gift will make in a child’s
life.
Frank did not talk about his many accomplishments. He focused on “giving a
hand up” and “together we can create a better world”. He reminded us that we all
have an obligation to give back and we can make a difference to those in need.
At the end of his inspiring message, he asked the audience to remember two things: (1) “REMEMBER THE
DIME” and (2) “BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF AND KEEP PEACE WITH YOURSELF”.
To Frank O’Dea, we say “THANKS A MILLION” for sharing his message of Hope, Vision, and Action.
“Every child deserves a champion– an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of
connections, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.” - Rita F. Pierson
TD BANK—PINEHURST AWARD RECIPIENT!
When The Pinehurst Club™ breakfast was first conceived, the
Pinehurst Committee knew that we needed a major Corporate Sponsor to
provide a financial foundation if the concept was going to work.
TD BANK provided that needed support! And they have continued to be one
of our Corporate Sponsors each year since. “The Pinehurst Award” is given
annually to a person, company or organization whose contribution to
Sleeping Children Around the World has helped defray administrative costs,
thus assisting SCAW to keep its promise that 100% of all bedkit donations go
to a child. JOAN GOODMAN, Senior Vice-President, GTA District,
received the award on behalf of the TD Bank. To TD BANK, we say
“CONGRATULATIONS” on being the 2015 recipient of The Pinehurst
Award and “THANKS A MILLION” for your ongoing and unwavering
support of The Pinehurst Club™ and SCAW since 2009.
THE BLUE SHIRTS—WE COULD NOT DO IT WITHOUT THEM!
By 6:00A.M. on May 6th, twenty-five SCAW volunteers wearing blue
shirts had arrived at the Canadian Room to set up the raffle table, and to
distribute the programs and other materials at each table prior to the arrival
of attendees at 7:00A.M.
They helped find the right table for attendees and they gave up eating
breakfast to sell raffle tickets. And, at the end of the breakfast, they took
down the bedkit displays and returned everything to its rightful place. To
SALLY JO MARTIN, volunteer coordinator, and to LINDA WEBB,
SCAW’s Executive Director, and to all THE BLUE SHIRTS, we say
“THANKS A MILLION” – we could not have done it without you!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Our Special Guest and Volunteer Speaker was none other than MAMA WANDOA,
our Overseas Volunteer Partner in Tanzania.
Mama left us with a message of gratitude by saying “THANK YOU” numerous
times. Besides being a Mother of 8, Grandmother to 20, and Great Grandmother to
6 (with one more on the way), Mama runs the “Upendo Information and Counselling
Centre” which provides counselling, care and support to HIV/AIDS infected/
affected people, especially children. Since 2000, she has partnered with SCAW to
distribute over 76,000 bedkits in Tanzania with another 5,000 to be distributed this
July. Mama reminded the audience that the Tanzania bedkits,
which include a Long-Lasting Insecticide Net, are saving
children’s lives and helping to decrease the ravages of
malaria amongst children in Tanzania. Her message includ-
ed “If you do something good, you will continue living”, just
like the legacy left by SCAW’s Founders, Murray and
Margaret Dryden.
At the end of Mama’s speech, she presented a hand-made beadwork made by her daughter to
The Pinehurst Club™, and Dave Dryden presented Mama with a SCAW Hockey Shirt with
“MAMA” and “15” (for 2015) on the back and “P” on the front for “Partner”.
To Mama, we say “THANKS A MILLION” for joining us on May 6th and “THANK YOU,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU” for her massive contributions to the distributions in Tanzania since 2000.
JOHN HERCUS—A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW!
The idea that hatched The Pinehurst Club™ breakfast was first conceived in
2007. JOHN HERCUS was asked at that time if he would Chair the event, and he said
“yes” in a weak moment.
John has chaired The Pinehurst Club™ throughout the ensuing 8 years and, with 7
breakfast events under his belt and over $1,000,000 being raised for SCAW’s Legacy
Fund, John is stepping down.
With that record, he is definitely a hard act to follow, but MAURICE KOWANETZ, a
SCAW Board member and volunteer, has accepted the challenge and will take over in
2016.
To John, we say “THANKS A MILLION” for your leadership, your creativity, and your
ability to pull all the pieces together.
AMBASSADORS— THE PINEHURST CLUB SALESFORCE!
The main function of The Pinehurst Club™ Ambassadors is to sell the tables and
seats. This year’s Ambassador group were instrumental in filling the Canadian Room
again. In fact, additional tables had to be brought in to fill the demand.
SCAW says “THANKS A MILLION” to the Pinehurst Ambassadors for offering their
time and resources, for spreading the message, for arranging for raffle prizes, and for
getting people into seats at The Royal York Hotel by 7:30 a.m. on May 6th – no small
feat!
This year’s Ambassador list included BRUNO AMADI, BOB BARCLAY, RICK
BELCASTRO, GARY COMERFORD, VITO CRAMAROSSA, SERGE
DELANNOY, KERRY HARMAN, MIKE JAMES, DUNCAN MACGREGOR, KEVIN McADAMS, JOHN
MARTIN, EVAN RUSSELL, MURRAY SMITH, MELANIE STRANIX, and SIEG WILL.
