MOMS CLUB MOMENTS JANUARY 2011

2

Vice President continued… This past year was quite a year for our club!

2011 marked the year we sistered and formed our own

MOMS club of Lewes. We had our most successful

Touch-A-Truck ever, raising $9,120 for the March of

Dimes! We raised $6,400 at our consignment sale and

$3,879 at our “Funds for Friends” Greene Turtle event

for the Dakota McLamb Memorial Fund to benefit the

maternity ward at Beebe Medical Center. And I want

to give a HUGE thank you to all of you who helped the

two families we adopted for Christmas. Together we

more than covered everything that was needed on the

families’ wish lists and I can only think how happy

those two families were on Christmas morning.

Looking ahead, we have so many great things to

look forward to this upcoming year. Since this time of

year can lead to cabin fever with the cold weather and

post-holiday letdown, take advantage of some of the

great things MOMS Club has to offer this month. Take

your kids out for Lunch Bunch at Nicola’s, come to the

Lewes library story time, and check out the playgroups.

Spring will be here before we know it!

New Year’s Resolutions

2

getting to see

the world around us through the eyes of our children. Never in my life have I had so much

fun riding the DC Metro as I do with my kid. His excitement and exuberance to be riding anything

resembling a train extend beyond me to all the jaded and bored passengers around him. They can’t help

but smile and laugh along with him.

I believe how we respect and live the small

experiences in our lives define our lives. Our kids’ reactions to the smallest of new experiences are

wonderful examples of living the good life. Watching an ostrich eat pine needles for nearly 20

minutes at the Cape May zoo (free) fascinated my son so much that he insisted on eating like an

ostrich for days after. We spent nearly an hour(!) in the minerals and gems area of the Smithsonian

Natural History Museum (again, free) where to my utter surprise, my three year old could not get

enough of the giant hunks of amethyst and pyrite. We hardly even need to travel to fuel our curiosity,

we all have the ever changing Atlantic in our backyards. No matter how often we hang out on the

beach, whatever season it may be, there is always a new creature or sea debris to discover, a new ship to

see, a new experience to be had. These are all moments I want more of in the New Year. These

are the moments that together make a happy childhood for our kids and make the sacrifices and

struggles of parenting completely worthwhile. This is the resolution I’m certain I will keep throughout

the year, and if I totally fail at every other resolution and end up with a house overflowing with SuperFresh plastic bags, it will still be an amazing

year.

1

Whether you choose to shun the idea of resolutions for the New Year or embrace them wholeheartedly,

a New Year is a fresh start and an ideal time of the year to rethink the way you parent and live your life.

I love setting resolutions because it’s always easy to make a meaningful list of changes, deletions and

upgrades to your life and the list making alone helps a person to feel accomplished. Resolution making is

easy and I love it. By the end of January, my resolutions are broken, forgotten, too difficult...you

know what I mean. I end up feeling guilty and a little bit like a failure. Nevertheless, I still make my

extensive list of small resolutions every new year, and include ones like finally, FINALLY start

remembering to bring that stack of canvas bags sitting in the back seat of my car into the grocery

store. Maybe this will be the year it becomes a habit.

Despite my neurotic list making, my one goal for

the new year that truly matters most in all aspects of life, particularly my parenting and family life, is less

stuff, more experiences. I recently had a conversation with another Moms Club Mom who

mentioned a weekend family trip to Williamsburg, VA. She gushed happily about how much fun her

family had and how she just wants to find time to DO more with her kids; how wonderful the

experience was for the entire family. Her comments resonated with me as I have been feeling a similar

urgency to experience more with my family. As my son becomes older and more curious about the

world and his surroundings, I just want to take him to new places and show him all of the natural and

man-made beauty the world has to offer. This goal can sometimes be frustrating when a family trip to

Europe and a cross-country train trip aren’t exactly in the family budget. Yet, experiences are not about

lavish and luxurious displays of opportunities that only money can buy. That would be missing the point entirely. Experiences are just as much about
