• A group of rats is called a ‘mischief of rats’!

• Rats are mainly nocturnal (night dwellers) and live underground.

• Although rats can be kept as cute pets, wild rats live in dirty conditions and can spread really dangerous germs to people in their urine and faeces (poo).

• A single rat can leave 25,000 droppings a year

• Rats have to GNAW to stop their teeth from getting too long. This means they chew through almost anything. They can cause serious damage to houses and electric cables.

• Rats breed very quickly and their need for food draws them close to people. Having a cat or dog is a good way to put rats off.

• Being careful about storing food and throwing food away helps keep rats away too.

• Rats are very good swimmers and climbers. They use their tails for balance too.
