THE NEW RULES OFPRESENTATION DESIGN
Plan First
Visuals Should Add to Content
Go Light on TextHave your content ready
before you launch
PowerPoint. Presentations
are a visual medium, so
sketch out your slides to
gauge its structure and avoid
timeconsuming edits later.
Use your slides as visual
prompts you can elaborate
on. Don't cram them with info,
and limit each one to
containing one piece of
information so you can guide
your audience's attention.
Your slides should work to enhance your
messaging. Include relevant, highquality,
images that match your subject. Pay special
attention to colours and fonts, ensuring that
they reflect what you're saying appropriately.
Respect Design PrinciplesEnsure elements are distinct from each other
using contrast. Employ repetition to create
visual uniformity. Employ alignment to make
your design balanced. Related elements
should be in close proximity to each other.
Visualise DataExcel sheets and charts are
boring, and unique data
visualisation increases
retention – so be creative in
how you present data. Even
small variations on
established formats will help.
Subtle AnimationDon't fear animations and
transitions in PowerPoint. Use
them subtly to help your story
flow along naturally, minimise
the disruption between slides
and build multiple layers of
communication.
