Keep Kneeling Down and Looking Up!
The following was sent to me just recently, author un-
known:
If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and
is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability
to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a
buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a
run of 10 to 12 feet. With out space to run, as is its hab-
it, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a pris-
oner for life in a small jail with no top.
The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarka-
ble nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a
level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all
it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, pain-
fully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it
can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off
like a flash.
A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be
there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the
means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find
some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will
seek a way where none exists, until it completely de-
stroys itself.
In many ways, we are like the buzzard, the bat, and the
bumblebee. We struggle about with all our problems and
frustrations, never realizing that all we have to do is
look up! That's the answer, the escape route and the
solution to any problem! Just look up.
My cousins tell me a story about their dad, my uncle Don,
who used to say to them ‘Keep kneeling down and look-
ing up”. Good advice but sometimes it is the last thing we
do. So often we try to fix our problems by looking down
and not kneeling. We scurry around looking here and
there for the answer when what we need to do is to kneel
down and look up more. Just yesterday I read that ‘Faith
is believing that God has and will do something not just
that God can do something. Sometimes in the midst of a
situation we need to remember how God answered prayer
in the past to give us faith to believe for the present and
the future.
The email concluded with:
Sorrow looks back, worry looks around, but faith
looks up!
Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak
kindly and trust in our Creator who loves us.
Trying to kneel down and look up more!

July 01
Canada Day
Once again I would like to pass on information
to keep in mind when a loved one dies. Of
course, you will need the services of a funeral
home and there are several in the community,
two of which are owned by a very large Ameri-
can conglomerate.
I know it is a stressful time when you have to
make the final arrangements and some of the
funeral homes take advantage of that stress,
mostly in subtle ways.
So I suggest the following: before it is neces-
sary to require the use of a funeral home and
the services they might offer, here are the
ones you might visit and ask what the mini-
mum cost for a basic funeral might be. What
that minimum cost covers and when does pay-
ment have to be made. Erb and Good, Water-
loo; Henry Walser, Kitchener; Memory Gar-
dens, Breslau; Robert Ruggles, Waterloo;
Westmount or Ratz Bechtel (both are owned
by Dignity) Kitchener.
If you wish a minister from your church to take
the service, whether it is in the church or the
funeral home or at the grave side, then you
need to have the funeral home consult with
that person as to their availability. A minister
will make themselves available unless there is
a conflict with another funeral or they are on
vacation. Most often they will have asked a
colleague to cover for them in such an in-
stance.
If you wish to have the organist or some other
musician participate in the service then that
information must be made clear to the funeral
home and to the minister and the musician.
The Worship and Music Committee would
like to announce that August 23 will be
Christmas at Forest Hill United Church!!
The Chandler Mowat BBQ Committee is
looking for bottles of nail polish. The
bottles can be old, new, or any colour.
One of the crafts at the BBQ will be
marbling mugs. There will be a basket
in the foyer to collect any bottles. If
you don’t have any bottles of nail polish
at home they can be purchased at any
dollar store.
Thank you!!
Funeral homes have very capable people to play at
a service, but if there is special music involved that
you know the organist at your church or some oth-
er person is able to play then by all means have
them take the service. You are going to pay for a
musician no matter if you have the funeral home
person or some other professional.
If you wish to have an order of service (bulletin)
that is information the minister needs to know so
that it can be prepared for print, funeral homes are
able to print the bulletins in colour if you have a
special picture or photo you would like on the cov-
er. Most churches are able to print off a bulletin as
well using covers that come in packages of a hun-
dred, to my knowledge Forest Hill’s service is free.
Choices of Scripture readings, hymns, other music,
can be included on an insert if they are not in the
funeral home’s music book.
If you wish to have the service at the church, it is
important that the office administrator for the
church be informed of the day and time so that oth-
er events in the church can be changed around or
cancelled as soon as possible. Sometimes the time
of funeral service will be determined by what other
events are booked for using the church’s facilities
just as at a funeral home.
There is no need to rush into what seems to have
become a three day frame. Taking time to prepare
the service that you would like to have that cele-
brates the person who has died with a mixture of
joyfulness, thanksgiving and memories is an im-
portant step in the process of letting go and griev-
ing the loss of a loved one.
Don’t agree to everything a funeral director might
suggest without asking how much it costs. Some of
the suggestions might easily be available elsewhere
at much less cost. Of course there are certain things
that are necessary, but unless already chosen and
paid for, an expensive casket is more for your sake
than the person who has died. Start off with the
bare minimum and only when you know what that
is should you move into what you think you can
afford.
If the funeral has been prepaid, make sure you
know exactly what has been paid for. Sometimes
we take for granted certain things are included in a
funeral and then find out music wasn’t included or
limousine service to the cemetery or from the fu-
neral home to the church for the family and or the
pall bearers.
If funeral arrangements have been paid for by the
deceased through one funeral home but you would
prefer to use another funeral home whether in
town or another city, the money, which has been
placed in trust and not with the funeral home, can
be transferred to pay the funeral home of your
choice. Make sure that you have the agreement
with you when you go to the funeral home and
they will make the transfer for you.
If you know there is already a cemetery plot, it is
helpful to know where it is in the cemetery, some-
times a funeral home may have two or three grave-
side services in a day and it helps if you know which
grave site is in your loved ones name to save confu-
sion.
I hope this is helpful; the more you know in times of
stress, the less stress there is created.

FREE WILL OFFERING
This performance will be the June meeting of the UCW.
We will be inviting other churches to attend. Our UCW
will be providing the desserts. If you would like to
attend, there will be a sign-up sheet on the UCW bulle-
tin board in the Fireside Room.
Murray Gordonier and the
property committee would like
to thank everyone who donat-
ed to help pay for the storm
water discharge system.
The Omas Siskona (Grandmothers Together) of
Kitchener Waterloo is holding a Car Trunk Sale
on Saturday June 27 in Christ Lutheran Church
parking lot. The address is 445 Anndale Road
and is at the corner of Davenport and Lexington
in Waterloo. For more information see
Nancy Zuk.
There will be a Special
Congregational Meeting on
Sunday June 14. It will be held after the Morn-
ing Service. It will be held to Accept and Ap-
prove the Governance Committee Final Report.
There will be a pulled pork lunch following the
meeting. There will also be accoutrements
available. It is being sponsored by Kirsten one
of the CGIT girls. There will be a free will offer-
ing towards Kirsten’s biocultural leadership
training in Panama.
The last was the BEST!!!!!!! Desserts, desserts,
desserts. Yes, our Pot Luck ended the year on
a very high note in many ways. It was a dream
come true for many. We had 85% desserts
and only 15% entrees. WE sure did enjoy it!
Our speaker, Kim Hayes from the donkey sanc-
tuary gave the history of the sanctuary along
with many very interesting facts about the
donkey. We learned about how very smart
these animals are and how they are Guardians
to flocks of sheep and cattle. Many of us will
visit the sanctuary this summer, just off the
401, at highway 6 north to Guelph. It is a great
place for ALL ages.
Another year is over and there are many peo-
ple to thank. Without them this would not be
an ongoing event. Thanks Georgi, Janice, Lin-
da, Don, Clair, Ken, Martha M., Leila, Bev, Pat,
Shirley, Chris R., The Boy Scouts, Connie, Kath-
erine.
Next year will bring more adventure and fun
times.
Have a SAFE HEALTHY SUMMER with Kindness
to All.

“What’s God Up To?” is a DVD series featuring Amy Jill
Levine, a dynamic and engaging New Testament Biblical
Scholar – who it just so happens is Jewish. Reading the Bible,
including the New Testament, through Jewish eyes gives us a
whole different perspective, informs our interpretations and
challenges our assumptions. And AJ loves to play with these.

Fundraiser for Sanctuary Roof
Replacement
A reminder that we are looking at a collec-
tion of one hundred and twenty thousand
($120,000.00) dollars to provide services
to replace the roof above the sanctuary.
The costs here are based on a roof area of
6,000 sq. ft. with a metal roof.
Each panel is 8’ – 0” X 4’ – 0” with an area
of 32 sq. ft. which would require 6,000 sq.
ft. divided by 32 sq. ft. or 188 panels
which would bring the cost of one panel to
six hundred and thirty eight dollars
($638.00). Work would start in March
2016.
Obviously this is a of lot money to collect
so we are looking at grant dollars for sup-
port.
Note: See further details on the bulletin
boards in the Fireside Room under the Prop-
erty heading.
The Fundscrip dates for
June, July and August are June
07 and 21, July 03, 17 and 31,
and August 12 and 26. For more
information, talk to Bob Elliott,
Glenna Murray or JoAnne
Willison.
