220 Anti-Doping Boss: Ban Russia!

1

Russia, one of the most successful countries in Olympic track and field history

should be banned from all athletic competitions, including the 2016 Olympic Games

in 1: Rio/London/Tokyo. This is the conclusion from a report from the World Anti-

Doping Agency (WADA) which has accused Russia of having a ‘state-supported’

doping programme. This means that members of the Russian government

2: hindered/helped/prevented athletes to cheat and avoid being caught by

international drug testers.

2

WADA’s report recommended that five athletes and five coaches be banned for life

from athletic events because of doping programmes. Dick Pound a Canadian former

president of WADA and the 3: boss/chief/person who led the investigation into

Russia’s alleged drug taking said that all Russian athletes must be banned for a

minimum of 12 months. Mr Pound said, “There may be no Russian track and field

4: runners/coaches/athletes in Rio. I hope they recognise it is time to change”.

3

The investigation into Russia’s alleged drug cheating programme was first revealed

by a German TV documentary in 2014. It claimed that Russian athletes paid 5% of

their earnings to Russian 5: doctors/coaches/officials to help stop their drug cheating

from being discovered. The WADA report also alleges that the Russian Anti-

Doping Agency (Rusada) destroyed more than 1,400 urine and 6: skin/cell/blood

samples so to prevent Russian athletes from failing international drug tests.

4 Russian athletic and government officials have strongly denied WADA’s claims.

7: Foreign/Health/Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko told Russia’s Interfax News Agency

that these claims were an attack on the Russian people. Mr Mutko added, “Any

suspension should be discussed at the 8: IFAC/IAAF/AFIA meeting in November. We should

be given a chance to clear our name”. Whilst Rusada director Nikita Kamaev said the

WADA report was, “unprofessional and illogical”.

5 Sebastian Coe the 9: British/American/French former double-Olympic gold medallist

and newly elected president of the IAAF has promised to consider sanctions against

Russia. Mr Coe said, “Where there are 10: successes/failures/problems in our anti-doping

programmes we will fix them”. Yet concerns remain that even more countries will have

been found to have operated drug-cheating programmes. The future of world

athletics and the Olympic Games is under threat unless all drug-cheats can be

caught and banned.
