220 Anti-Doping Boss: Ban Russia!

Russia, one of the most successful countries in Olympic track and field history
should be banned from all athletic competitions, including the 2016 Olympic Games
in 1: Rio/London/Tokyo. This is the conclusion from a report from the World Anti-
Doping Agency (WADA) which has accused Russia of having a ‘state-supported’
doping programme. This means that members of the Russian government
2: hindered/helped/prevented athletes to cheat and avoid being caught by
international drug testers.

WADA’s report recommended that five athletes and five coaches be banned for life
from athletic events because of doping programmes. Dick Pound a Canadian former
president of WADA and the 3: boss/chief/person who led the investigation into
Russia’s alleged drug taking said that all Russian athletes must be banned for a
minimum of 12 months. Mr Pound said, “There may be no Russian track and field
4: runners/coaches/athletes in Rio. I hope they recognise it is time to change”.

The investigation into Russia’s alleged drug cheating programme was first revealed
by a German TV documentary in 2014. It claimed that Russian athletes paid 5% of
their earnings to Russian 5: doctors/coaches/officials to help stop their drug cheating
from being discovered. The WADA report also alleges that the Russian Anti-
Doping Agency (Rusada) destroyed more than 1,400 urine and 6: skin/cell/blood
samples so to prevent Russian athletes from failing international drug tests.
4 Russian athletic and government officials have strongly denied WADA’s claims.
7: Foreign/Health/Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko told Russia’s Interfax News Agency
that these claims were an attack on the Russian people. Mr Mutko added, “Any
suspension should be discussed at the 8: IFAC/IAAF/AFIA meeting in November. We should
be given a chance to clear our name”. Whilst Rusada director Nikita Kamaev said the
WADA report was, “unprofessional and illogical”.
5 Sebastian Coe the 9: British/American/French former double-Olympic gold medallist
and newly elected president of the IAAF has promised to consider sanctions against
Russia. Mr Coe said, “Where there are 10: successes/failures/problems in our anti-doping
programmes we will fix them”. Yet concerns remain that even more countries will have
been found to have operated drug-cheating programmes. The future of world
athletics and the Olympic Games is under threat unless all drug-cheats can be
caught and banned.
