The Foundation Makes Its First Assist

The Harvey Bernhardt Foundation’s mission tosupport our neighbors in need became a reality inOctober 2008. The

first gift was approved bythe board and given toArthur Robert “Bob”Rhodin, a 57-year-old res-ident of Neptune Beach.Rhodin was referred to usby Bob Crouch, a friend ofthe foundation. Crouchread an email about theRhodin family’s situationand he passed on theinformation.

“As soon as we read thearticle, the board was infull agreement on helpingthe Rhodins,” said boardmember Chris Hodge.“They are hard-working members of our community anddue to an unexpected medical hardship are now inneed of community support.”

Following an outpatient procedure last April, Rhodin, ateacher and basketball coach at Fletcher High School, contracted a spinal cord infection which left him an

incomplete quadriplegic. Since his release from the hos-pital in August, Bob and his wife Janice, a teacher at

Neptune BeachElementary, are learningto adjust to life with Bobin a wheelchair.Because Rhodin hopesto resume teaching, rehabilitation is a primaryconcern. To this end, theHarvey BernhardtFoundation was happy topurchase for him astanding frame -- a pieceof equipment which willhelp him prevent muscleatrophy, continue to growstronger, and enhancehis life and capabilities.Janice says Bob appreci-ates the support and that

the frame has been a key element in his rehabilitation.

“We are happy to help such deserving members of ourcommunity,” said Board Chairman Wes Bernhardt. “Weknow the Rhodin’s will overcome this hurdle so they cancontinue teaching children in our community.”

Dear Friends,It has been an amazing year for everyone associatedwith the Harvey Bernhardt Foundation. Thanks to manyof you, my father’s idea of assistinghard-working first coast families whohave been faced with an unexpectedhardship has become a reality.

The Harvey Bernhardt Foundation hasbeen an overwhelming success. We'veheld two entertaining and extremely ben-eficial events raising more than $43,000.And with your support we were able tomove forward with our first compassion-ate assist.

When faced with an unexpected medical crisis, theRhodin family of Neptune Beach was referred to TheHarvey Bernhardt Foundation. Their situation was

reviewed and the organization was able to provide theassistance needed to keep the family on track throughtheir crisis.

We know Dad is watching over usproudly now, and is grateful to all ofyou for your generosity and support.

We look forward to building the founda-tion in the coming year, and we remaincommitted to helping first coast familiesin need.
