Introducing our Two New San Lucas
Toliman Scholarship Students ...
Marco Tulio Saloj was twelve years old on February 21. He is the oldest of three children in his family, and has a younger brother and a baby sister. The family live in the small village of San Martin, some five miles from San Lu-cas. Marco's father does odd jobs, and works as a day laborer. His mother
works as a housewife, and also weaves to make ends meet. In his spare time, Marco goes to the hills to cut and collect firewood for his family. He helps his Mum with the chores - cleaning the house, washing dishes - and also helps by looking after his younger siblings. In the recent sixth grade exams, Marco did very well. Sponsorship will allow him to go on to secondary school.
Selvin Aurelio Chiroy Vasquez was thirteen on July 20th. He is the oldest of four children in his family, and has two younger brothers and a younger sister. The family live in Quixaya, a large village some seven miles from San Lucas. Selvin's father works in the Miralmar plantation, where the major work is in dairy production. Selvin's mother works as a housewife. In his spare time, Selvin goes to the hills to cut and collect firewood for his family. He also likes to play soccer. He too helps his family, helping take care of his younger siblings. In the recent sixth grade exams, Selvin did very well. Spon-sorship will ensure he is able to continue on to secondary school.

2 Book Suggestions for Our Times
Silence in the Age of Noise by Erling Kagge, Pantheon Books, New York, 2017.
What is silence? Where can it be found? Why is it now more important than ever? Written by a Norwegian ex-plorer who spent 50 days walking solo across the Antarcti-ca, this book is not primarily a spiritual book but in es-sence is. It consists of 33 brief observations showing why silence is essential to our happiness and open doors to wonder.
Not In God’s Name: Confronting Religious Violence by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Schocken Books, New York, 2015.
A powerful and timely book in these days of religious ex-tremism and violence done in the name of God. Sacks explores the roots of violence and religion radically re-reading the Genesis stories of Cain and Abel, Isaac and Ishmael, Jacob and Esau, and Joseph and his brothers. An eloquent call for people of the three monotheistic religions and of goodwill to confront religious extremism.
This year’s Super Bowl Sunday is February 4, 2018 and SOUPER Bowl of Caring will raise money to benefit our food pantry that weekend.
Young people at St Mary’s will be at each entrance of our church after Masses on Feb 3 and 4 to collect do-nations. Please give generously on Souper Bowl
weekend.

Catholic Social Teaching: Life and Dignity of
the Human Person: As a society, we all need to
stop making excuses and commit to a movement
for nonviolence that involves all of us. A commit-
ment to authentic community, what we might call
civic friendship, requires a deep personal conver-
sion of heart and mind. A conversion that allows us
to see everyone as made in the image and likeness
of God, and possessing an inherent dignity that de-
serves not only our protection but our respect, hon-
or and love. This includes everyone - those with
whom we work, stand in line, sit next to in Church
or the movies, sign contracts, share neighborhoods
and schools – as well as those we too often do not
see – those in nursing homes, on street corners, in
unsafe neighborhoods or in our prisons or recently
released from them. REV. GEORGE MURRY, S.J, CHAIRMAN, AD-HOC COMMIT-
TEE AGAINST RACISM. USCCB
Fact: This year we celebrate 50 years since Martin
Luther King gave his I Have Dream speech in
Washington D.C. Yet hatred and violence persist in
our country and around the world. TAKE ACTION FOR JUSTICE:
Get involved in thoughtful discussions about race
relations in our nation by attending an upcoming
film: I Am Not Y our Negro on Jan 31 at Unitarian
Universalist Society, 12 Ford Ave or Bambmoozled
offered by NAACP and the City of Oneonta Com-
munity Relations and Human Rights Commission,
with discussion facilitated by Pastor Teressa Sivers
of First United Methodist Church on Feb 2 at
Southside Mall in the community room. Both films
begin at 7:00 PM and are free of charge.
