Sunday Afternoon

PARTICULARS CAN NOT BE LEARNED

Last Sunday morning about 8 oclocka dispatch from Helena Ark reachedColumbia directed to Mr James Gar ¬

nett and signed J P Burks which

readJM Scott fatally shot come at

onceMr Garnett was not at home beingen route for Pineville and during theday nothing else was discussed Aboutfive oclock in the afternoon the sec ¬

ond message came stating that MrScott died at 230 oclock

Monday Judge W W Jones for thefamily of the deceased wired MrBurks to have the body shipped to thisplace and it will probably reach Camp ¬

bellsville this Tuesday nightMr Scott was a wellknown news ¬

paper man and at the time of his assasination was City Editor of the HelenaArk > World He was also wellknownin this section of Kentucky having beena writer on the Columbia Spectator andthe Mountainer which was publishedat Somerset Like all the flesh he hadhis faults but he was a kindhearted I

man ever ready to lend his assistanceto those in distress He was honest inall his transactions meeting his obliga ¬

tions promptly His untimely and man ¬

ner of death was generally regrettedhere where he had a large number offriends He leaves a wife and onechild a sonabout five years old

All the information we have is con¬

tained in the following dispatchLittle Rock Ark Aug 4A spe ¬

cial to the Gazette from Helena Arksays J M Scott city editor of the

I

Helena World was found on the side ¬

walk this morning at 2 oclock Twobullets had entered his head and al ¬

though he lived a few hours after beingfound he was unable to make a state-ment

¬

So far no clue to the assassin

existsAago an attempt was made to

kill Mr Scott He was attracted tothe rear of his office by a noise and onapproaching to ascertain the cause twoshots were fired at him He beganfiring in return and his assailants fledHe was not able to identify them

Jt is generally believed that the killng was due to a personal quarrel andthat it had no connection with the cru-

some months ago which forcedthe resignation of the chief of policewho afterward attempted to commitsuicide

BURNING TRUTHS

The large congregation at the Christ ¬

ian church last Sunday forenoon cer¬

tainly heard a sermon worth listeningto The Rev A R Kasey of theMethodist church was the speakerand tor almost three quarters of anhour he held the attention of his au ¬

dience in a way that was almost mar¬

velous It may be an astounding factto a great many persons but accordingto the Bible there are a large per centof liars in the world to day who havenot the truth in them and these liarsare not all outside the church eitherJohn puts in this meaning Any manwho saith he knows God and keepethnotJiis commandments is a liar andthe truth is not in him It is indeeda strange thing to see some meh live alie and act a lie every day on the out ¬

side among their fellowmen when with¬

in their very souls they know that Godsword tells them very plainly that suchis the case v

Rev Kaseys comparison of a worth-less

¬

hound dog to a great many menwas very appropriate and a better ill-

ustration of the subject could not havebeen portrayed The old lazy houndthat would not run or let any of therest of the pack get ahead of himbe ¬

cause he would jump on them and fightthem back can be applied to men everywhere and a great many xight hereinColumbia as for that matter Theresure lots jpf two legged hoimotyin the

lot

world in the form of men who whethey see their fellowmen attain untolittle success or portion in life theywill jump on him and fight him downand do every thing in their power t-

his hurt Such men know not theiChrist they are hypocrites and liarsand the truth is not in them

Such able expositions of the burningtruths contained in the Bible as the onedelivered by Rev Kasey upon this oc ¬

casion should cause men to examinetheir own hearts and see whether ornot they are living in accordance withJohns view of the matter The dis-

course¬

0

was powerful logical and con ¬

wincing and the depths of its meaninis unfathomable It is not my purposeto make meritorious mention of anyperson unless I believe he or she to bedeserving of such but when a man haspower and force of character sufficientto say what he believes is true andright then I think he deserves creditand praise F McL
