{Techniques I like

By Bailee Brooks

A Focus Pull is a when a shot transitions to a different focus point within a shot. I feel this shot is really effective as it allows you to focus on multiple things in one shot without having to film two separate ones. Its satisfying to watch as if performed correctly and at the right pace, it can emphasise importance of characters or objects. An example of a film that includes this is Jurassic park where the camera zooms slowly into a close up of a man holding a shiny stone, which then pulls the focus from the man to the stone. Showing the importance of the stone.

Crane shots are a way of establishing the scene without using everyday methods such as establishing shot or long shot. A crane shot is more Intriguing to watch than simple shots. It also can introduce other elements of a room you may not see without a higher shot. An example of a productions that uses this is technique include: El Greco and My life in Ruins, plus many other examples. As seen in the link below

I like matching action shots as they make a production more interesting. Some find it boring to watch a continuous shot that goes on for a while, a matching action shot allows the audience to stay interested whilst watching a shot, it also makes a scene shorter keeping the audiences attention span high. An example of a media production that uses this technique would be the TV series ‘Friends’ who use a matching action shot to show a kiss between two characters without it being one single shot.

Matching action shot

Although this technique is considered quite simple I find it shows keeps the audience members engaged with the production as it is not a continuous shot, similar to the matching action shot. A Jump cut increases the intensity of a scene as well as keep the scene exciting. An example of a film that uses this technique is ‘A space odyssey’ which jumps between cuts of a gorilla throwing a bone and a spaceship lying through space.
