Teachings from the Qur’an and Hadith

The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam. Muslims believe the Qur’an is the book of

God’s guidance and direction for mankind. Muslims consider the original Arabic text to

be the final revelation of God. Islam says that the Qur’an was revealed to

Muhammad by the angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years.

The Qur’an was written down by Muhammad's followers while he was alive, although most early teaching was done orally.

The Hadith and The Sunnah

The Hadith is a collection of the sayings about the actions of Muhammad.

The Sunnah is a record of the way Muhammad lived his life which should serve as an example to Muslims.

The concepts are very similar, but not identical.

Diet

“Forbidden to you (for food)are: dead meat, blood

the flesh of swine, and that,on which hath been invoked

[called on, prayed]the name of other than God…”

Qur’an V:3

Prayer

“Ibrahim b. Yazid al-Taymi (may God be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said: The Earth is a mosque for you, so wherever you

are at the time of prayer, pray there.”

Dress for Women

“And say to the believing womenthat they should lowertheir gaze and guard

their modesty; that theyshould not display their

beauty and ornaments exceptwhat (must ordinarily) appear…”

Alcohol

“Satan’s plan is (butto excite enmity [anger] and hatred

between you, with intoxicants [alcohol]and gambling, and hinder you

from the remembranceof God and from prayer:

Will ye not then abstain [hold back]?”

Qur’an V:91

Courteousness

“When a (courteous) greetingis offered you, meet it

with a greeting still morecourteous, or (at least)

of equal courtesy.God takes careful account

of all things.”

Qur’an IV:86

Charity

“O ye who believe!Give of things

Which ye have (honorably) earned,And of the fruits of the earthWhich We have produced…”

Qur’an II:267

Forgiveness

“Say: O my Servants whohave transgressed [sinned] against their

souls!Despair [lose hope] not to the Mercy

of God: for God forgivesall sins: for He is

Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

Qur’an XXXIX:23

Respect for Parents

“Thy Lord hath decreedthat ye worship none but Him,

and that ye be kindto parents…

Say not to them a wordof contempt [scorn], nor repel them,

but address themin terms of honor,”
