Goals for 2011
In February, 2011 installed 2 new crystals in the vertical goniometer MS-8 and a MS-16.
Also installed a 2 plane pixel upstream of the E03 collimator to image beam effected by crystals.
T980 study period:Tevatron incorporated 2 weeks of studies which allowed ~ 40 hours of
dedicated studies for T980.Studies were held May 15 – 27 and hosted 3 visitors. 2 from CERN and 1
from INFN.
T980 study period plans:Commission horizontal and vertical pixel detector.Image horizontally channeled beam on the horizontal pixel detector.Image vertically multiple volume reflected (MVR) beam on the vertical
pixel detector.Scan and Characterize a new Multi-strip (MS-16) crystal and look at
efficiencies.Demonstrate 2 – plane crystal collimation using a vertical MS-8 using
MVR and horizontally using channeling from an O-shaped crystal.

SUMMARY
• O-shaped and 8-strip crystals worked well in the last studies at Tevatron. Estimated channeling efficiency of O-shaped crystals is 65-75%, volume reflection efficiency of 8-strip crystal is 70%.
• Horizontal pixel worked well, while vertical pixel had too many dead pixels to resolve MVR from MS-8.
• Results to characterize MS-16 are inconclusive because of time needed to diagnose that the length of crystal and motion of goniometer produce losses that are difficult to untangle.
• Results of the two-plane measurements are also inconclusive - setup time is extensive & comparison of loss signals are subtle - more time is needed to further study.
