TYPES OF SYNTHETIC DRUGS▪ Synthetic Cannabinoids and Synthetic Cathinones are commonly sold in legal

retail outlets (most commonly “head shops”) and are widely available online.

▪ Sold as “herbal incense,” “plant food” or “bath salts” with warning labels that state “not for human consumption”

A mixture of herbs typically sprayed with a synthetic compound similar to THC (ingredient in marijuana). The chemicals are NOT natural nor are they a synthetic version of the active ingredients in marijuana.

Although some compounds are illegal – products are still commonly sold in head shops, various retail outlets and online.

Often marketed as incense or fake weed.

Smoked or made into tea

High potential for abuse. Psychology effects may be similar to marijuana and include paranoia, panic attacks and giddiness

The chemicals appear to be stored in the body long term and there is no long term studies that have evaluated the long term effects on the body

According to the DEA there have been no reported deaths by overdose.

Many reports of suicide and injury while using the drug.

Sold in powder form in small plastic or foil packages of 200 and 500 milligrams under various brand names.

Chemicals in these products are synthetic derivatives of cathinone, a central nervous system stimulant.

Sniffed, snorted, smoked or dissolved and injected into veins

Effects similar to amphetamines, cocaine, LSD, and MDMA (ecstasy)

Effects include agitation, insomnia, irritability, dizziness, depression, suicidal thoughts and panic attacks.

Also reports of impaired perception of reality

Rapid heart rate, chest pains, nosebleeds, sweating, convulsions and vomiting.

Many reports of violent behavior, overdose deaths and other devastating consequences
