TOPIC-1 FOOD
What is food?
Food is what people and animals eat to survive. It is eaten by living things to
provide energy and nutrition. Food contains the nutrition that people and
animals need to be healthy. The consumption of food is normally enjoyable to
humans. It contains protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, water and minerals.
Care of Food
5 Ways to keep food safe
1. Keep clean: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap before handling food.
2. Separate raw and cooked foods. Do not use the same knife or any other
utensil for raw and cooked foods. When buying groceries, make sure that
the two are in separate bags.
3. Cook foods thoroughly. Make sure that meats, seafood and vegetables
are completely cooked.
4. Keep food at safe temperatures:- Bacteria starts to enter food two hours
after it is prepared.
5. Use safe water and raw materials when preparing food. Make sure
that the fruits and vegetables are thoroughly washed, and the meats and
seafood are still safe to eat. If you are not sure if the water is safe, boil it for 10
to 15 minutes.

What is balanced diet?
A healthy diet or balanced diet is a diet (what you eat) that contains the right
amounts of all the food groups. It includes fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy products,
and protein. ... Eating wrong amounts of a food group, whether it be too much or too
little, is called an "unhealthy diet" or an "imbalanced diet".
Need of food
1. Food is essential for our body to develop, replace and repair itself.
2. Food provides us energy to work and play.
3. It protects us from diseases and help to recover fast from illness.
4. We need to eat balance diet for proper functioning of body.

We can divide food into different according to what they
do for our body.
1} CARBOHYDRATES:
CARBOHYDRATES provides energy to our body we should take
adequate amount of carbohydrates in our body. Little amount of
carbohydrates makes us weak and tired. Too much amount of
carbohydrates makes us obese.
2} PROTEINS:
Eggs, chicken, fish, almonds, oats, cheese, yogurt and milk are very
rich source of PROTEINS.
USES OF PROTEINS:-
● Growth and repair of the body.
● Formation of new cells.
● Help in repairing the damage cells.
3} FATS:
USES OF FATS:-
● Fats provide lots of energy.
● Fats keep the body warm.
Our body needs very little fat. Extra fat is stored in the body. This extra
fat makes a person bulky and this condition is known as obesity.
4} WATER:
WATER is not a nutrient but it helps in proper functioning of our body.
FUNCTIONS OF WATER:-
● Water helps in digestion of food.
● Water removes the waste from our body in the form of sweat and
urine.
5} ROUGHAGE:
The fibres present in all plant products constitute ROUGHAGE.
USES OF ROUGHAGE:-
● It adds bulk to the body.
● Prevents constipation.
6} VITAMINS and MINERALS:
There are two main types of VITAMINS:-
FAT SOLUBLE VITAMINS:

VITAMINS protect us from diseases and keep our body healthy
and fit.
MINERALS are the substances that help in the formation of
