Goals
Main goals for HRPD Local Breakout• Allow AT to reach local server/printer at home
via HRPD Femto• Off-load traffic from wireless operator’s
backhaul when AT is on Femto• AT should still be able to access service on
wireless operator’s domain similar to when the AT is on macro basestations
3
Femto Local Breakout Overview
• Red = Traffic Traversing Operator’s network– Goal : Allow ATs to be able access
services similar to when AT is on macro network
– Assumption : There is IPsec tunnel between Femto cell and the wireless operator’s network
• Blue = Local breakout to public Internet via Femto– Goal : Traffic can bypass home network
to save operator’s resources and improve latency
• Green = Local breakout to local CN– Goal : AT can communicate with servers
at home

Supporting HRPD Local Breakout
• AT uses AN-terminated stream for local breakout (blue and green) and PDSN-terminated stream only for operator’s service (red)
• Two IP interfaces and addresses are assigned to the AT
– Green and blue are on AN-terminated stream and are in one IP interface
– Red is on PDSN-terminated stream and is another IP interface (same with legacy)
– Each packet is routed on to an IP interface based either on application or routing policy
• Analogous to how VPN works

Recommendation
- Standardize method to support Local Breakout for HRPD Femto
- Allow HRPD Femto to assign IP address to AT on AN-PPP- Specify behavior of IP interface associated with AN-PPP regarding
initialization, handoff, IP address assignment
- Define mechanism to upload routing policy to AT- Define RADIUS parameter whether the user is authorized to
use local breakout
