Welcome to Sunbury and the Big Walnut community, and on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce Officers and Board of Directors, I welcome

you to the 2012 edition of the Chamber Membership Directory and Community Profile.

Our Chamber has a proud, 35-year history of encouraging business development and fostering business contributions to support a wide

variety of civic causes. Having grown from a small group of local folks who wanted to raise funds to offer the community a nice fireworks display

on the 4th of July, we are now that and so much more!

We provide our members with resources such as this directory and a great number of networking opportunities throughout the year, to help

them grow their businesses. Participation in the Chamber of Commerce makes great business sense. We encourage businesses and residents of

the Big Walnut community to shop and trade locally, to ensure that our area continues to have a strong presence in the fast-paced economic

Our Mission StatementThe mission of the Sunbury/Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce is to foster, support and promote the business environment in our community.

Chamber Community Expo -• Each spring the Chamber brings this event to Big Walnut High School to give our business and nonprofit members the opportunity to promote themselves to the community. We welcome over 400 visitors to the event each year and host the Expo with numerous partners to ensure the local residents get to see the “Best of Big Walnut!” Visit SunburyBigWalnutChamber.com.

Farmers’ Market on the Sunbury Square - • Rain or shine, each Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon from mid-May to mid-October, the Chamber hosts the Sunbury Farmer’s Market. Visit the Square to purchase a wide variety of homemade and homegrown goods produced locally. Close park-ing, a friendly atmosphere and the best vendors make this a staple of the community. Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial -• A fitting tribute to our loved ones who have lost their lives to the war on ter-rorism, the Fallen Heroes Memorial brings many visitors to Sunbury year-round. Dedicated in 2007, a memorial service is held in July each year so we “never forget.” Visit OhioFallenHeroes.org.

Big Walnut Relay For Life -• Partnering with the American Cancer Society, Big Walnut is proud to host the Relay for Life each June at Big Walnut High School. Following the ceremonial survivor’s lap, the Friday evening festivities kick off the over-night relay for participants to raise funds for cancer research. The closing ceremony on Saturday at noon reflects on this huge commitment of a small town. Visit RelayForLife.org/BigWalnut.

Big Walnut Friends Who Share -• Focused on improving the living con-ditions of residents in the Big Walnut School District, Friends Who Share accepts donations of nonperishable food items and gently used clothing,

furniture and household items to give back to those in need, free of charge. A host of volunteers spend countless hours caring for our community, one jar of peanut butter at a time. Visit BigWalnutFriendsWhoShare.org.

Run For John -• Each September brings the 5k Run for John to Sunbury, in memory of local resident John Scanlan, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 44 from cardiac arrest. Funds raised are donated to Big Walnut Friends Who Share to honor John’s memory and dedication to the community. Visit RunForJohn.com.

4-H and the Fairs -• Just one of the many commitments this com-munity makes to our youth is through leadership and participation

in our local 4-H Clubs and our local fairs. Crafts, livestock and horticultural projects are just a few of what you will see from the Big Walnut youth at the Delaware County and Hartford Fairs. Visit 4-H.org, DelawareCountyFair.com and HartfordFair.com.

Sunbury Square Flea Markets -• Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day are all easily recognizable in the Big Walnut com-munity with the presence of the flea mar-kets on the Sunbury Square and the crowds of visitors from all over central Ohio who have come to shop. The Memorial Day flea market is hosted by the Big Walnut Music & Marching Boosters to raise funds for the

schools’ music programs. Our Chamber hosts the July 4th Independence Day market to cover the costs of bringing an amazing fireworks display to the community. Labor Day belongs to the Sunbury Lions Club, who hold their annual Ox Roast and serve must-have sandwiches all day, rais-ing funds to do the work of their organization throughout the year. Community Commitment & Involvement

F rom our many quaint antique shops to the businesses working out of our Sunbury Industrial Park, this area has so much to offer. Eastern Delaware County is strategically located for both U.S. and

international business and features a rich mix of agriculture, manufactur-ing, distribution, retail and higher education opportunities.

The historic Sunbury and Galena Squares boast local eateries, shops, banks and other small businesses for local residents and visitors alike. The Sunbury Industrial Park is home to the local school district’s bus garage, concrete manufacturing, automobile and motorcycle parts manufactur-ing, lawn and landscaping services, and electrical and communications

providers, to name just a few. Continued growth in the Big Walnut business world is imminent, considering the economic development the eastern por-tion of the county has seen in recent years.

The business of the Big Walnut Local School District continues to flow as we grow and guide our children into the future. With the addition of the new Rosecrans Elementary in 2010 and the new Middle School in 2011, two former buildings were temporarily closed for cost-saving measures. The 2012–2013 school year will welcome the reopening of the former middle school as an Intermediate building to house our fifth and sixth graders, as well as the school administrative offices.

Our Chamber…Business at Its Best!

W ith our many growing community attractions it’s getting easier to get in some exercise and quality outdoor

time at our public parks and trails!J.R. Smith Park in Sunbury hosts many little

league activities and features a baseball diamond, picnic area, updated playground equipment, and football and soccer fields. The Big Walnut Conservation Club also hosts little league activi-ties. Harlem Bicentennial Park, near Center Village, has a picnic area with a shelter and baseball diamonds. Ruffner Park in Galena has baseball diamonds, a picnic area with a shelter and a nice playground. McNamara Park, in Genoa Township, boasts a playground, shelter house, soccer fields and a direct connection to the Ohio to Erie Trail, a bike/walking path that runs through Genoa Township to the southern part of Galena. The Village of Galena is proud of their boardwalk on Hoover Reservoir, where you can enjoy the wildlife and waterlife.

Kinslow Park Disc Golf Course is undergo-ing rehabilitation thanks to the generous support of Columbus Flyers Disc Golf Club and the Village of Sunbury’s Parks Committee. By the end of 2012 look for new concrete tee pads, mulched paths and landscaping. Check the Chamber’s website for local tournaments, or stop by for a relaxing hike through the woods while trying to come in under par. The course continues to be free to the public.

Walking distance from the disc golf course is Freedom Park, on Ohio 61 in Sunbury behind Sunbury Church of the Nazarene. A new under-taking by volunteers at the church, the park’s initial phase of construction is complete, with plans in place to expand over the next several years. Feel free to make use of the facility while

taking children to team practices or just stop by on a sunny day for a picnic and some playground fun.

Make sure to check out our communities’ many walking paths. Delaware County Friends of the Trail (DCFT) are actively working to pro-vide a comprehensive series of trails throughout our community.

Hoover Scenic Trail was completed in October 2010. It starts at Plumb Road in Delaware County between Old 3C Highway and State Route 3 and runs through the Hoover Nature Preserve. A pedestrian bridge overlooks Hoover Reservoir, with incredible bird watching opportunities.

Big Walnut Community Trail, a 0.6-mile surfaced trail in Sunbury, follows an old railroad bed from a trestle across Old 3C Highway to Big Walnut Elementary. The trailhead is just above Columbus Street just south of S. Vernon Street.

Galena Brick Trail is a 900-foot trail that follows an old rail bed behind the former Galena Shale and Brick factory north, between Big and Little Walnut creeks.

Genoa Township Trail runs from Mt. Royal Avenue to Plumb Road along an old railway down State Route 3. It connects to the Westerville Trail system to the south and ends to the north. The DCFT and Delaware County secured a Clean Ohio Fund grant to continue the trail from Plumb Road towards the Village of Galena.

Athletic associations in the community con-sist of the Girls Softball Association, Junior Baseball Association, Soccer Association, Youth Athletic Association, Youth Basketball Association and the Big Walnut Athletic Boosters.

Established in 1816, Sunbury surrounds the intersections of U.S.-36/OH-37 and State Route 3 and is the central hub of Big Walnut. With a pop-ulation of approximately 4,500, the village continues to grow rapidly, yet it maintains its small-town atmosphere. Originally settled by soldiers from the American Revolution, Galena is located directly south of Sunbury. Galena is a thriving community and has quaint shops, restaurants, businesses and the Hoover Reservoir boardwalk, all located near the Galena Square. Berkshire townshipberkshiretwp.org

The first group of settlers arrived in Berkshire in 1804, and the original township was founded in 1806. Just west of Sunbury and near the I-71 interchange, Berkshire offers professional-caliber golf clubs and luxury condominiums and will welcome new shops and additional housing within the next few years.

Founded in 1816, Genoa is located south of Galena and borders Westerville and the Polaris area. With the scenic Hoover Reservoir and a portion of the Ohio to Erie Trail, Genoa attracts many wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. harlem townshipharlemtwp.com

Harlem was formed in 1810 and is located in the southeast portion of the Big Walnut area. With more than half of its 27 square miles remaining primarily agricultural, the rural character of this township remains in the forefront. Kingston townshipkingstontwp.org

Becoming a township in 1813, Kingston lies in the northwest section of the Big Walnut area and still remains primarily rural. Here you will find the birthplace of Major General William Starke Rosecrans, a Union general in the Civil War. Porter townshipportertwp.org

This township, formed between 1826 and 1827, is about 26 square miles and home to about 1,800 residents. Between 1830 and 1835, what had been Sunbury Township became Trenton Township. The township is noteworthy as being the home of Sunbury’s crystalline erratic. Deposited by a glacier, it is the largest crys-talline erratic in the area and measures 22 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet high.
