Técnicas de Inspección
Estas plagas son interceptadas durante la inspección física de los productos. Es muy
importante que cada producto sea sacado de su empaque y inspeccionado
visualmente por síntomas de daño causados por insectos y patógenos. Los
productos deben de ser sacudidos sobre una superficie limpia y usualmente de color
blanco para que resalten los insectos. También la presencia de ciertos insectos como
las larvas de trips pueden ser detectadas mucho mejor sacudiendo el producto sobre
una superficie oscura, de color negro opaco para que no refleje la luz.

Técnicas de Inspección
Las larvas de Noctuidae sp., son muy pequeñas. Estas se detectan por su movimiento
y su cabeza negra. Ellas se levantan después de un corto tiempo de caer del producto.
Los inmaduros de Miridae sp., también son muy pequeños. Se reconocen por su rápido
movimiento al caer del producto sobre la superficie sobre la cual se inspeccionan.
Los minadores, Agromyzidae sp., se reconocen por sus caminos (minas) dejadas en las
hojas en las cuales se encuentran alimentándose. Las pupas de estas se encuentran
tanto dentro de la hoja como afuera. Frecuentemente cuando se sacude el producto,
las pupas caen. La mosca blanca es muy pequena y como su nombre lo indica de color
Blanco.

Técnicas de Inspección
Es muy importante tener un lente de mano y buena luz para revisar los productos.
Se debe de aplicar suficiente fuerza para golpear o sacudir el producto para hacer que
los insectos caigan de estos. El golpear el producto suavemente, no produce una buena
inspección. Las hojas deben de ser examinadas por síntomas de enfermedad, daño,
enrollamiento, presencia de huevos, “caquita” y minas.
Los tallos deben de ser cogidos por su parte de abajo y sostenidos sobre la mesa de
inspección y golpeados con la otra mano poniendo mucha atención después de cada
golpe a ver que cae del producto.

Al respecto, el investigador del Grupo de Tecnología de Invernaderos y
Agroplasticultura de la Universidad Nacional, Daniel Briceño, afirmó que los
pequeños agricultores o productores deben trabajar de manera significativa en temas
clave del mercado actual de las hierbas para poder potenciar la capacidad de
comercialización. 'Principalmente, los pequeños y medianos productores de hierbas
aromáticas y medicinales deben trabajar en tener trazabilidad de los productos, lo que
significa que estén detallados y controlados todos los aspectos del cultivo. Esto
incluye un manejo muy disciplinado de la información, de la aplicación de los
agroquímicos, los abonos y las fechas de los cortes para poder acceder a los
mercados', explicó el experto.
Agregó que el productor debe apuntarle a una mejor rentabilidad en el negocio, 'y
para ello es necesario mejorar los estándares de calidad en todos los cultivos„.

Potencial de Exportación y Retos
El potencial exportador de hierbas aromáticas en Colombia es grande, puesto que estos
productos tienen un significativo consumo en mercados naturales como Estados Unidos
y Europa, y por ende se convierten en grandes demandantes.
Según el Ministerio de Agricultura, Colombia exporta anualmente cerca de 1.200
toneladas por un valor de US$2,6 millones, siendo Estados Unidos, Canadá y la Unión
Europea los principales destinos. En ese orden de ideas, las variedades que más se
venden al extranjero son albahaca, hierbabuena, tomillo y romero.
Sin embargo, para los productores las barreras sanitarias que impiden acceder a los
mercados internacionales se convierte en el palo en la rueda de su competitividad.
Para Fabio Tabares, productor de hierbas aromáticas, 'al ser estos productos
perecederos, las condiciones de logística se hacen difíciles y por ende la exportación, ya
que el puerto usado por la mayoría de las pyme dedicadas a este negocio no tienen
vuelos directos a estos países donde el mercado es muy bueno. Además, para este tipo
de productos es necesario agilizar el transporte de los mismos, y así garantizar la vida
útil de las hierbas y sostener sus condiciones de calidad'.
