It gives me great pleasure and pride to introduce the thesis projects of the graduates of the College of Design. This book is a culmination of a 5-year program that equipped our graduates with skills and technical knowledge of increasing complexity. At the heart of design is a continuous strive to solve problems and improve the lives of others.

This book gives you a small glimpse of what our graduates are capable of by offering vignettes into their graduation projects and selected previous projects.

Thesis projects are the outcomes of an academic year’s worth of work that starts with a project of the students’ choosing that fits with set criteria. One semester is spent on thorough and detailed research which includes understanding all aspects of the problem, learning from case studies and engaging with stakeholders. In the second semester, this research is applied through design iterations that test and continuously improve the design solutions.

For many, ‘Design’ is about aesthetics, but that is not our ultimate aim. Design can be used for the betterment of living conditions, creating awareness, or allowing inclusivity. These are only a few of the things that design can achieve. Our aim is to graduate students who can make an impact, do good and are effective in their country’s economy.

In 2019, we graduate our first cohort of Industrial Designers and our seventh cohorts of Interior Designers and Graphic Designers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the faculty of the College for their dedication and hard work in preparing our graduates for their careers. I would also like to congratulate our graduates on their achievement and thank them for their commitment and perseverance. Great things await you!

Interior Design as a profession focuses on the design of the internal environment of buildings through studying the social and cultural needs of the user and the building’s function (residential, commercial, administrative, educational, etc.) and systems (structural, environmental, ..) in relation to the building’s architecture.

The program of Interior Design at the COD is a five-year undergraduate professional degree program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. Each academic year consists of two semesters. The program is sequenced to provide systematic learning and to reinforce essential concepts as students proceed through the program. The undergraduate curricula in design are divided into two phases; a preparatory year in the Engineering Track that all College of Design students complete in the first year, followed by four years of the core program of study.

Congratulations to the Interior Design cohorts of 2019! Our graduates specialize in the field of Interior Architectural Design. They have a strong foundation of practical skills, design, and conceptual thinking, as well as a strong theoretical perspective onto the field.

The program is dedicated to graduating designers who are ready for the local design market in Saudi respecting the local traditions, and global design understanding and connecting to international design.

The program emphasizes human-centered design involved in the design and specifications of private and public spaces, such as hospitals, hotels, restaurants, financial institutions, and schools in relation to the respective technical and cultural aspects.

Today more than ever, our nation, following the Saudi 2030 vision, is in the midst of many significant changes and a promising future for females in particular. This is an exciting time to be an alumna of the Interior Design Department and the College of Design. Welcome aboard!

Interior Design Studio 10 course focuses on completing the graduation projects for the Senior students who deal with real world design problems by integrating programming, research, design process and using advanced graphic, verbal and written communication skills. The outcome synthesizes the knowledge and design capabilities acquired during their five years studies.Upon completing the course, students become completely independent, self-critical and prepared to join the workforce in the professional practice.
