STATUS OF ETD IN INIDIA

PRESENTED BY

AUROBIND BEHERA

INTRODUCTION

Theses and dissertations are raw, rich and unique source of research information, often become the only source that does not find its way to various publication channels. A doctoral thesis reflects quality of research work conducted by a student over a period of time. The fruits of research, from the formal research programmmes of conventional universities and academic research institutions in India, were under-utilized as the access to theses, dissertations and research reports were very limited to the next generation researchers and scholars.

WHAT IS THESIS AND DISSERTATION

A thesis (from Greek) is an intellectual proposition. A thesis statement is the statement that begins a formal essay or argument, or that describes the central argument of an academic paper or proposition.

In academia, a thesis or dissertation is a document that presents the author's research and findings and is submitted in support of candidature for a degree or professional qualification (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academia).

ELECTRONIC THESIS AND DISSERTATION

An e-Thesis is a thesis in electronic format that is archived and organized into a digital library collection and made accessible electronically via networks such as INTERNET. e-Thesis may be a born digital one or digitized version of a born analog (print) thesis. e-Theses are also known as Electronic Theses and Dissertations or ETDs or Digital Dissertations worldwide.

An ETD is a valuable document that explains the research of scolarship of a scholar or researcher/student. It is expressed in a form simultaneously suitable for machine archives and worldwide retrieval(http://etdguide.org).

WHY ETDsTo help graduate students to learn about

e-publishing and digital libraries;To empower students to convey richer

message through use of multimedia;To improve graduate education through

more effective sharing of information;To ensure timely availability of university’s

unlocking intellectual property; andTo improve the services and resources of

the library so as to save money and space.

BENEFITS OF ETDs Broader exposure of university research through greater

accessibility; Opportunities to use new forms of creative scholarship

through use of interactive elements such as multimedia, hyperlinks, etc.;

Ability to have a hyperlink to the thesis/dissertation on homepages;

Professional development experience for research students as they learn the basic skills of scholarly publishing in an electronic format;

Conservation of paper, library storage space and of library staff time saved;

Faster and immediate access, with publication near the point of submission rather than three to four months later;

Theses or dissertations are made accessible to any potential reader every day at any time (http://etdguide.org/).

CONCLUSIONPopularization of ETDs and its full advantages for

faculty, students, and researchers .Well-equipped computer labs must be put in place to provide workstations, software, and technical support staff for students writing ETDs. Appropriate standards need to be developed for the presentation of dissertation research—standards which facilitate the development of a useful and easily navigable digital collection of works.
