STAAR QUESTION

What can you do to

help your child prepare

for the STAAR Math

test?

•MATH FACTS-Drill your child in the car, before dinner, before bed… (a few minutes here and there helps!!!)

MULTIPLICATION IS A BASIC SKILLS THAT SURROUNDS ALL MATH TOPICS!!

Math in our

Everyday Lives

•Time – Give your child time questionsSuch as: If I put the dinner in at 6:45 and it

takes 1 hour and 5 minutes, what time would it be done? They need to be able to read a clock with hands, not a digital clock.•Fractions – Recipes•Measurement – use ruler to measure things around the house, find area and perimeter.

Math in our

Everyday Lives

•Money – Help your child determine the price of the items they are buying and the change they will receive once they pay for those items.•Multi-Step Problems- This is where most kids get confused. The problems are no longer just one or two steps and students need to be able to process all steps involved to find the answer.

Blueprint for STAAR Science test

5th grade Science Topics

• Matter and energy

• Rock types and rock cycle

• Natural resources

• Forces that change the earth

• The solar system

• Lunar Cycles

• Ecosystems

• Adaptations

• Inherited and Learned Traits

• Water, Carbon, and Nitrogen Cycles

• Life Cycles

STAAR Question

What can you do to

help your child prepare

for the STAAR Science

test?

•Magnetic or Not?-use your refrigerator to see what items are magnetic.•Phases of the Moon-go over calendar with your kids and observe the night sky. Telescopes would be great for exploring this concept.•Weather Systems- watch the news, talk about all the different aspects of weather-Temperature, pressure systems (H and L), weather patterns (Hurricane season), tides, etc.•Reflection and Refraction- use a mirror to look at your reflection and put a pencil in a glass of water and notice that it looks broken. (refraction)

Science in our Everyday Lives

•Learning and Inherited traits- look at your family tree and compare and contrast yourself with your other family members.•News- The news can be a great source of science information and new discoveries.•Animal Interactions- Pets, observing the outdoors, bird feeders.•Educational Toys- Sonic solar system, board games, cereal boxes•Books- read great Science oriented books

Science in our Everyday Lives
