DESCRIPTION

Agriculture and livestock are the integral part of farming system and important sources of livelihoods in rural areas. Livestock, especially dairy is one of the major sources of livelihood for landless youth and women. Health and productivity of milch animals is largely dependent on feed availability as well as its cost and quality. Spent malt is good feed material for livestock for improving health, milk yield and fat content. Date: 09 September 2014

Spent malt•Spentmaltisabyproductofbrewingindustry,consistingoftheresidueofmaltandgrainwhichcontainscarbohydrates,protiens,ligninandwater-solublevitaminsasanimalfeed.

• Itisquitepalatableandisreadilyconsumedbyanimals.

Spent malt as a business model•ItisasuccessfulbusinessmodelinFasalvadivillage,MedakdistrictandreplicatedinAdarshawatershed,Kothapallyvillage,Shankarpallymandal,RangaReddydistrictinTelanganastate.

•TejasriwomenSHGhasundertakentheresponsibilityoftransportationanddistributionofspentmalt.

•Trainingoncare,handlingandmaintenanceofspentmaltwasgiventowomenSHGandfarmers.

Benefits to farmers

•Fifty-fourbeneficiaryfarmersareutilizingthespentmalt(1080kg/day)andfeeding268milchanimals.

•Totalmilkproductioninthevillageisabout1250lit/dayanduseofspentmaltasanimalfeed,increasedmilkproductionof1.5liter/animalperdaywasobserved.

• IncreasedgrossincomeonmilkproductionisaboutRs12950/daywithanetincomeofRs9710/day.

• IncreasednetincomeofRs.291420permonthwithanaveragenetincomeofRs.5400perfamily.

Benefits to SHG•SpentmaltisprovidedbythebreweryatthecostofRs.1.75/kgandSHGissellingatRs.3.0/kg.

•TejasriwomenSHGhasprovided397882kgofspentmaltandearnedanetprofitofRs22020during12monthsperiodaftermeetingalltheexpenses.
