Sep 2014 Spent Malt as Cattle Feed: Sustainable Business Model Background • Agriculture and livestock are the integral part of farming system and important sources of livelihoods in rural areas. Livestock, especially dairy is one of the major sources of livelihood for landless youth and women. Health and producvity of milch animals is largely dependent on feed availability as well as its cost and quality. Spent malt is good feed material for livestock for improving health, milk yield and fat content. Spent malt • Spent malt is a byproduct of brewing industry, consisng of the residue of malt and grain which contains carbohydrates, proens, lignin and water-soluble vitamins as animal feed. • It is quite palatable and is readily consumed by animals. Spent malt as a business model • It is a successful business model in Fasalvadi village, Medak district and replicated in Adarsha watershed, Kothapally village, Shankarpally mandal, Ranga Reddy district in Telangana state. • Tejasri women SHG has undertaken the responsibility of transportaon and distribuon of spent malt. • Training on care, handling and maintenance of spent malt was given to women SHG and farmers. Benefits to farmers • Fiſty-four beneficiary farmers are ulizing the spent malt (1080 kg/day) and feeding 268 milch animals. • Total milk producon in the village is about 1250 lit/day and use of spent malt as animal feed, increased milk producon of 1.5 liter/animal per day was observed. • Increased gross income on milk producon is about Rs 12950/day with a net income of Rs 9710/day. • Increased net income of Rs. 291420 per month with an average net income of Rs. 5400 per family. Benefits to SHG • Spent malt is provided by the brewery at the cost of Rs. 1.75/kg and SHG is selling at Rs. 3.0/kg. • Tejasri women SHG has provided 397882 kg of spent malt and earned a net profit of Rs 22020 during 12 months period aſter meeng all the expenses.
