Södertälje - a tale of segregation

ECOLOGICAL SEGREGATION

Occurs when ecology restricts, separates or con-tains certain individuals or groups. Commonly spa-tial, but can also include education and knowledge as causes of paralysis of movement or interaction.

Table 1-3 Social data of the residents in the four areas included in national anti-segregation initiatives

(Södertälje kommun 2007a, Södertälje kommun 2007b, and www.usk.stockholm.se).

Södertälje - a tale of segregation

VOCAL SEGREGATION

Occurs when one is not heard, understood or can-not express naturally and freely. Language barriers are common in this form of segregation.

Hovsjö

Fornhöjden

Hovsjö and Fornhöjden - Strengths and Opportunities• The district of Hovsjö has a high priority in the local authorities and amongst politicians

• After several initiatives and programmes implemented in the areas, a lot of experience and background material is available

• The residents of the area are interested in an improvement of their situation

• There are already well functioning networks in the areas [e.g. with schools, churches, health care services, property owners and local associations]

• Södertälje is in the focus nationally when it comes to issues related to immigration from the Middle East - the mayor of Söder-tälje even talked about this in front of the American Congress

Hovsjö and Fornhöjden - Challenges and focus points• Culture clashes when the inhabitants do not know the Swedish planning process and culture or have little knowledge about Swedish administration

• Language problems - a lot of the inhabitants do not speak Swedish

• Tiredness amongst the residents - these 3 areas have been object of many studies and approaches without real improvements for the residents - so, now something proper needs to be achieved in order to keep them motivated to participate and help im-prove their areas

• Vandalism and criminality is common in these areas and supports the bad outside image of the areas in the city and the region

• The areas are not at all integrated into the urban life of Södertälje - they are home to many excluded people - while for other citizens of Södertälje there are hardly any reasons to ever visit these areas

Hovsjö and Fornhöjden Unresolved + Future issues• Previous initiatives have not led to a general and especially not to a lasting regeneration of the areas

• Physical problems, crime, vandalism and a very bad outside image still remain a major problem

Main Objectives of Local Action Plan:

• Sustainable regeneration of the deprived areas - with a special focus also on physical and economic regeneration

• Improvement of the bad outside image of the areas and their re-integration into the urban context of Södertälje

• New methods for a better integration of ethnic minorities - leading to their growing independence and involvement in neighbour-hood regeneration

Can a network of schools in the

what if...Urban shepherding education is

introduced to the school curriculum

at Hovsjö and Fornbackaskolan, at the

implement urban shepherding at a city scale?

next steps ?

step 1 - play

In a game players become super empowered, hopeful individuals.

Jane McGonigal

Games are a means of engaging individuals in

collective action. By exploring alternatives to the current

models of urban planning and architecture, a truly

participatory process can be enacted, allowing the game

just like the animals it represents to meet each individual on

the same level.

to graze on Orion Hill in Spring 2014. The sheep are

moved through the city to different pasture daily, however

they return once a month to Orion Hill on the first Sunday of

each month for fårfika, where a member of the city planning

office, a shepherd and some students from the schools are

present to ask questions and treat visitors to fika.

to continue...ME - meet with Hovsjöskolan and Fornbackaskolan to create

a workshop to explore the possibilities of a urban shepherding
