4G is an initialize of the term Fourth-Generation
Communications System.
4G refers to the next generation of wireless
technology that promises higher data rates andexpanded multimedia services.
Fourth generation wireless system is a packet
switched wireless system with wide areacoverage and high throughput.

The term 4G is used broadly to include several
types of broadband wireless access communication
systems, not only cellular telephone systems.
The approaching 4G (fourth generation) mobile
communication systems are projected to solve still-
remaining problems of 3G (third generation)
systems and to provide a wide variety of newservices, from high-quality voice to high-definition
video to high- data-rate wireless channels.

The 4G system was originally envisioned by the
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
(DARPA).
The DARPA selected the distributed architecture
and end-to-end Internet protocol (IP), and in
peer- to-peer networking.

4G is being developed to accommodate the Quality of Service
(QOS) and rate requirements set by forth coming applications
like ;
1. MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service).
2. Wireless Broadband Service.3. Video Chat.
4. Mobile TV.
5. Digital Video Broadcasting.
6. High Network Capacity.
7. Data Rate of 100 Mbps for mobile and 1Gbps in stationary .8. Seamless Connectivity and Global Roaming across multiple networks.

The first generation -1G was introduced in the early1980s. 1G supported analog signal with the speeds up to2.4kbps.
The second generation- 2G was introduced in the late
1980s.It support digital signal and the speeds up to64kbps.
The third generation- 3G wireless system was developedin the late 1990s .3G provided the transmission speedsfrom 125kbps to 2Mbps & many services, such as global
roaming, good voice and video quality. The fourth generation- 4G is introduced in 2002. The
speeds of 4G can be up to 1Gbps.
The next will be 5G with incredible transmission speedwith no limitation for access and zone size.

1G - Poor voice quality, Poor battery life, Large phonesize, No security, Frequent call drops ,Limited capacity,Poor handoff reliability.
2G - Requires strong digital signals to help mobile phones work. If there is no network coverage in anyspecific area, digital signals would be weak. It do notsupport high data rates. They are unable to handle
complex data such as video.
3G - High bandwidth requirement for High spectrumlicensing fees need big capital.

“Transmitting & receiving antennas”
Doesn’t require increase power or additional
frequency. Fix no. of beams that can be selected to
follow devices as it moves about. Advantages: Increased capacity, Increased range.
Less power use for transmission , New services,
Increase security .

“ Internet Protocol Version 6”
In the context of 4G, IPv6 support is essential in
order to support a large number of wireless-enableddevices.
IPv6 also enables a number of applications with
better multicast, security, and route optimizationcapabilities.

“Voice Over Internet Protocol”
Allows only packets (IP) to be transferred
eliminating complexity of 2 protocols over the same
circuit. All voice data will be wrapped up in a packet - faster transmission. Samples voice between
8,000 & 64,000 times per second and creates stream
of bits which is then compressed and put into a
packet. Increases battery life due to greater datacompression .

Affordable communication services.
High speed, high capacity and low cost per bit.
Support for interactive multimedia, voice , streamingvideo, Internet and other broadband services.
Global access, Service portability and scalable mobile
services and variety of quality of services provided.
Better spectral efficiency.
Seamless network of multiple protocol and air
interfaces.

Battery usage is more.
Hard to implement.
Need complicated hardware.
The equipment required to implement a next
generation network is still very expensive.
Carriers and providers have to plan carefully
to make sure that expenses are kept
realistic.

4G is coming quicker.
Fast internet access to both stationery and mobile users.
4G can be efficiently combined with cellular
technologies to make consistent use of smart phones andalso create video blogs.
This gives the manufactures the opportunity to produce
more affordable user friendly 4G compatible devices.
4G is capable of providing new horizon of opportunityfor both existing and startup telephone companies.

The applications of 4G are called “KILLER
APPLICATIONs” as it is going to bring to
revolution in the internet world.
1) High Speed Data Rate due to which a moviecan be downloaded in 2 to 3 minutes.
2) More Security.
3) Video Conferencing.4) Higher Bandwidth.
5) Global Roaming.

As the history of mobile communications shows,
attempts have been made to reduce a number of
technologies to a single global standard.
4G seems to be a very promising generation ofwireless communication that will change the
people’s life in the wireless world.
4G is expected to be launched by 2010 and the
world is looking forward for the most intelligent
technology that would connect the entire globe.
