THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

By Sean Carroll

P-3

Functions

The Skeletal System helps support the body, allows it to move, protects the muscles, and produces and stores materials needed for the body.

Major Parts/Organs

Some of the major parts of the skeletal system are the bone marrow and the compact bone tissue. Red bone marrow produces red blood cells, and yellow blood marrow stores fat. Compact bone tissue is the harder outer layer of the bone and is made of a dense web of fibers.

Interactions With 2 Other systems The Skeletal system works with the

muscular system to remove you from an area with unpleasant stimuli.

The skeletal system also works with the circulatory system by making red blood cells

Role in maintaining homeostasis Supplies calcium to nerves, muscles,

and the heart. They also help remove you from unpleasant stimuli by working with the muscular system to allow you to move.

Health/Diseases

Arthritis- a very painful inflammation and stiffness in the joints

Osteoporosis- a disease where the bones become very and fragile from losing tissue. This usually occurs from lack of calcium or vitamin D.
