Since 1947 the problem solver for on board
aircraft communications
END - Next
Gemelli Company started the operations in 1947 under the name of “Laboratorio Radio di Gianni Gemelli” with design and manufacture of radio tranceivers for aeronautical and marine applications.
During the 60’ and 70’ Gemelli turned is production to the Intercom Systems (ICS) for aeronautical
Aircraft such FIAT AVIAZIONE (today ALENIA) F104G e S, G91, G91Y, G222, PIAGGIO P148 e P166, AERMACCHI MB326, SIAI MARCHETTI SF260 and S211
In the same period all the AGUSTA helicopters were equipped by Gemelli ICS.
From Gemelli facility more than 20.000 units were supplied to the Customers.
In the 80’ Gemelli was continuing developing a new generation of ICS that are still today the main components of the Gemelli production.
THE HISTORY
Gemelli radio have been used in 1954 by Italian team who first reached the K2 summit and also, in 1960, as official radio for the Olympic Games in Rome

Many of the programs started in that period do not have Gemelli presence.
At the end of the 90’ Gemelli change the ownership and the new management introduced a new development line dedicated to the Active Noise Reduction technology. This new line was referred as “WONDERCOM and includes headset and helmets for flying operations.
In the last two years Gemelli continued to invest on research including the development of Digital ICS and Wireless system for communications inside and outside the aircrafts. Contemporary a new project for an innovative helmet was launched.
During the 90’ Gemelli was obliged to reduced the activity for financial problems arising from the crisis of EFIM, a group that have the control of Agusta. When the activity restart the Ownership decides do not invest additional money and the activity is only related to the support of the existing equipments.
To recover the programs started in that period the new ownership decides to invest in a development of system able to substitute the equipment installed on the lost programs and acquires the majority of the new Italian programs. The results was very positives and today the Gemelli ICS equips:
Agusta: A129, A109Power, A109Nexus, AW139, AW149, AW169, AW189;
Aermacchi: MB339, M346; M311

THE PROBLEM OF NOISE ABATEMENT
A.N.R. TECHNOLOGIES – THE PRINCIPLES
In the last ten years, noise abatement technology using active system has undergone
significant development. Such technologies, also known as A.N.R. (Active Noise
Reduction), place undesirable ambient noise levels under control and drastically reduce
the impact on the operators who have to support such conditions by means of the real
time generation of signals in equal counterphase in modulation and frequency to the
pre-existing disturbance. Clearly, the closer to the reality is the mirror image of the
noise disturbance created in the real time, the greater the active reduction system will
be effective.

THE PROBLEM OF INTELLIGIBILITY IN
COMMUNICATIONS
M.A.N.P. TECHNOLOGIES – THE PRINCIPLES The communication is in any case contaminated by outside noise together with the
voice communication signal entering the microphones, so is necessary to adopt a
system capable of discriminating the signals present on the microphone line and
distinguishing the communication from the noise that accompanies it.
This system exists today and is patented under the name of M.A.N.P. (Microphone
Active Noise Processor). It has the following features:
• in the presence of noise only, it strongly attenuates the signal present, so
a VOX device will never be open
• in the presence of communication and noise, it discriminates between the
two signals, enhancing the breadth of the communication and strongly
attenuating the noise
Practically it enables a microphone to be capable of distinguishing between the
voice signal entering into the communication lines from the noise present in the
environment. Thus the most important problem deriving from the use of A.N.R.
techniques, is solved.

THE PROBLEM OF INTELLIGIBILITY IN
COMMUNICATIONS
M.A.N.P. TECHNOLOGIES – THE PRINCIPLES
It is known that in communications systems the signal to noise ratio is the
fundamental parameter to obtain the correct intelligibility of the information
transmitted and received.
Research has shown how the intelligibility of communications deteriorates due to
the undesirable presence of low frequency noise. This tends to eliminate a number
of articulate fragments of the conversation, which consequently becomes
impossible to understand fully.
As we have already seen, the A.N.R. system can be used to significantly reduce the
presence of low frequencies, in this way bringing about a considerable
improvement in the capacity to communicate in environments with high noise
levels.
But it is important to point out that the definition “everything that enters the
communications microphone is the signal desired” does not fully satisfy the
requirements of a communication with a high signal to noise ratio.

A.N.R. & M.A.N.P. TECHNOLOGIES The M.A.N.P. circuits, when used in conjunction with “intelligent” VOX circuits, are
enabling the personnel wearing A.N.R.-M.A.N.P. earphones or helmets to achieve a
communication path with a best possible signal to noise ratio

THE COOPERATION WITH LOCKHEED MARTIN
GEMELLI JOINS THE “JSF CLUB”
Gemelli has proved itself at the highest technological level. Lockheed Martin
has, in fact, just awarded its research and manufacturing facilities in
Canegrate an important contract for the supply of protective headsets for the
F-35 Joint Strike Fighter System Development & Demonstration (SDD)
Support Equipment Program for ground personnel assigned to F-35 aircraft
development activities. The JSF is the latest, most important aeronautical
program to be launched by the U.S. Government and is expected to dominate
the manned fighter arena for the next 30 years or so.
Gemelli’s success in this project crowns years of study and dedication to
producing the best possible solutions to protect personnel working in
extremely noisy environments.

In 2004 GEMELLI started to cooperate with LOCKHEED MARTIN to develop an active
noise reduction system for the fighter Pilot Helmets

FURTHER USE FOR THE M.A.N.P. SYSTEM
It is interesting to note that, as the M.A.N.P. system is able to discriminate between
the communications signals and the noise present on the line, it can also be used as a
pilot system for other electronic devices applied to the communication line. It is
possible, for example:
• to completely close the communications line in the presence of noise only (which
will therefore never be transmitted to the operators)
• to pilot a P.T.T. (Push to Talk) switch of any transceiver apparatus without using
the hands
• to enable the operator of an apparatus using a VOX system to communicate
without having to shout to overcome the opening threshold, even in the presence
of particularly high ambient noise levels (the VOX threshold may be reduced and
kept from opening except in the presence of voice communications, as it is
piloted by M.A.N.P. system)
