Collaborative opportunities in electronic resource management using emerging web technologies

• Why is collaboration fundamentally necessary with ERM?

• What opportunities does Web 2.0 open up?• Some obstacles to collaboration in ERM• A glimpse at what might be possible with Web 3.0

eResources impact all areas

e-Resources are now an essential part of the library service, and as such, have a lot of internal stakeholders.

Management styleERM is an area that is very difficult to write procedures for, as the situation changes on an almost daily basis. This in turn makes it difficult to standardise practice for a team of people to take on the work.

Stopping the pain?

shared innovation

Where is the pain?

• Complexity and fickleness• Inaccurate information• Multiple evaluation criteria• Maximising visibility to end-

users• Weight of administration

• Data problems– Slow updates– Inaccuracies– No data?

The transfer of titles between publishers is arguably our biggest problem. There are always problems with the quality of data in the knowledgebase. There is definitely a case for a collaborative community piece. We’re often reporting this sort of thing to Ex Libris so the knowledgebase can be updated.

How would a collaborative approach to knowledgebases help?

• Supply chain efficiencies• Single source of truth• Innovative services

shared innovation

Where is the pain?

• Multiple evaluation criteria– Stakeholder feedback– Vendor sustainability– Technical evaluations– Usage statistics

How would a collaborative approach help with evaluation?

Using feedback from a subject librarian at another institution would definitely be useful, especially if It was the same or a similar subject.

Where is the pain?

• Maximising visibility to end-users– Downtime notices – Information literacy– Troubleshooting

How would a collaborative approach help with advisory notices of planned downtime?

• Single source of truth• Accurate information• Less support calls

How would a collaborative approach help with information literacy?

• Shared repository• Quality materials• Efficiencies

How would a collaborative approach help with troubleshooting?

• Wiki-type system • Sharing• Efficiencies• Editing previous solutions• Eliminating duplicated effort

How would a collaborative approach help with administration?

• Centralised shared data

Should we adopt a collaborative approach to the whole of ERM?

What are the obstacles?

However…

Social software has some mileage in the realm of licensing. There is a parallel here with cataloguing. It would be particularly beneficial for NESLI which is the same for everyone. There is occasional divergence by publisher or by library.

How does Web 2.0 map to ERM?

• Participative• Sharing• Communication and community• Based on trust• Remixing diverse sources

So what is Web 3.0?

shared innovationshared innovation

Web 3.0 Futures – Usage Statistics

• Usage statistics in isolation• Outcome-based approach• Adding meaning

Journals on global warming are not highly used but Imperial has a dedicated centre for research into global warming. So Imperial are wary of comparing apples with pears. It’s more of an art than a science.

Web 3.0 Futures – Trial Selection

• Selection of trial participants• Identified through diverse sources

shared innovationshared innovation

Conclusion

• ERM is inherently suited to a collaborative approach

• But not every area of ERM operations will benefit• Some obstacles may disappear in time• There are some exciting opportunities with

significant business benefits
