Q: From a Hiram, Ohio reader: "Are there any de-velopmentally disabled nonhuman primates? Forexample, a gorilla with Down syndrome?"
A: Many such examples exist in the scientific liter-ature, says Frans de Waal of the Yerkes Primate Cen-ter of Emory University and author of The Age ofEmpathy. "I know cases of trisomy (three copies of achromosome, instead of the normal two) of chromo-some 22 in one chimpanzee and one orangutan; inboth, the condition was associated with mental re-tardation superficially resembling Down syndrome, which afflicts humans with trisomy 21."
Also a chimpanzee named Knuckles, still alive inFlorida, has cerebral palsy, and Azalea, a young rhe-sus monkey that de Waal knew personally, had tri-somy of chromosome 18. She was clumsy in herlocomotion and acted in a socially inept manner; shesometimes threatened dominant individuals, whichin the strict hierarchy of rhesus society is a big "no-no." Interestingly, whereas other monkeys would getpunished for such transgressions, Azalea was ex-tremely well-tolerated, as if the others knew therewas something wrong with her and cut her someslack. The same consideration has been claimed forKnuckles, "a tolerance I attribute to the capacity forempathy in primates."
Q: In the popular new winter Olympic sport ofcurling—think shuffleboard on ice, with four mem-bers on a team—a forty-two-pound banded stone issent sliding over an ice rink toward a target region. The stone starts out going straight but curves gradu-ally to one side, increasing near the end. What's thepoint of this "curl," and how is it done?
A: Skilled curlers use it to finesse their stonearound other stones that might shield the target, says Jearl Walker in The Flying Circus of Physics. This sideways deflection comes from the friction be-tween the stone's narrow circular band and a thinlayer of liquid water melted from the ice. Due to thestone's spin, the speed of the band varies from pointto point, causing variable friction and deflecting thestone. This uneven friction also accounts for thestone's behavior at the end of its glide, spinningaround one side as if pinned there.
Curling is often played on pebbled ice (with smallupward protrusions), possibly to exaggerate the de-
flection. Vigorous sweeping of the ice just in front ofthe stone (a colorful feature for spectators) is thoughtby many players to add length to the path and to in-crease the curl. "While the sweeping is sometimesunfairly scoffed at, it certainly removes grit andloose ice that would hinder the stone, but it may al-so lubricate the stone's motion by partially meltingthe ice."
Q: About seven billion of us humans are alive to-day, twice as many as in 1965, with roughly seventy-five million added every year. By U.N. predictions, there could be another two to four billion by 2050.But growth hasn't occurred every day. Can you citea few of those extremely rare days when world pop-ulation actually shrank?
A: The most recent was December 26, 2004, whenthe Indian Ocean tsunami killed nearly 250,000 peo-ple, says Alison George in New Scientist magazine.Another 160,000 died of other causes, and the day's370,000 births couldn't compensate, reports environ-mentalist Robert Engelman in his book More. Othersuch days include the Tangshan earthquake in Chi-na on July 28, 1976 and the devastating cyclone thathit Bangladesh on November 12, 1970, each killing250,000; and also the seventy thousand deathscaused by the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, onAugust 6, 1945.
Historically, the flu pandemic of 1918 to 1920 atabout fifty million deaths almost certainly stalled theworld's upward population trend. The biggest "hit"was the Black Death of the fourteenth century at per-haps seventy-five million, reducing Europe's popu-lation by thirty percent. "Things will be verydifferent in the future," says George. "There will stillbe disasters and wars, of course, but sometime after2050, the world will enter a new era when the popu-lation will shrink on many days. We will simply behaving fewer children."
Q: What surprising barnyard animal passes the"mirror test," demonstrating both intelligence andself-awareness?
A: Elephants, dolphins, magpies, gray parrots andsome primates were already known to make sense oftheir mirror images and to show some degree of self-
recognition, says Constance Holden in Science mag-azine. Recently, zoologist Donald Broom and col-leagues at the University of Cambridge, U.K.,wondered if socially sophisticated pigs might alsobelong to the elite mirror group. So they set up a testleaving eight pigs with a mirror for five hours. "Thepigs initially interpreted their image as another pig,"the error most species make, says Broom. But thenthe pigs began to recognize the reflections of theirown movements.
Proof of true mirror-smarts came in the next test, where the researchers hid a bowl of food behind abarrier so that it could be seen only in the mirror. Anoverhead fan circulated the food's scent so the pigscould not simply use their nose. "In less than twen-ty-five seconds, seven of the eight pigs correctly in-terpreted the image, turned away from the mirrorand ran to the bowl. The eighth pig flunked the test, looking behind the mirror for the food."
Q: What's the funniest thing about laughter?A: Most striking and most intriguing is how conta-
gious it is, answers Frans de Waal in The Age of Em-pathy. It's almost impossible not to join in wheneverybody else is laughing, the reason there havebeen laughter epidemics where no one could stopand some even died in a prolonged fit. This is whyTV comedy shows have prompting laugh tracks andwhy theaters sprinkle paid "laugh plants" through-out audiences. There are even laughing churchesand laugh therapy based on its healing powers. Amust-have toy of a few years ago was the Tickle MeElmo doll that would laugh hysterically whensqueezed three times.
Amazingly, laughter's infectiousness even worksacross species. "At my office window at the YerkesPrimate Center, I often hear my chimps laugh duringrough-and-tumble games, and I cannot suppress achuckle myself. It's such a happy sound." Such tick-ling and wrestling are the typical laugh triggers forapes and probably the original ones for humans aswell. The fact that it is notoriously difficult to tickleoneself attests to the social significance of laughter."Instead of being Robinson Crusoes sitting on sepa-rate islands, we are all interconnected, both bodilyand emotionally."
