Discussion

Why are we so hard on ourselves?

Have you ever noticed how people tend to be nicer the further out they go from their inner circle? The nicest vet in the world may be brutal to his family, hideous to his wife and totally miserable to himself. We’re not as mean to a stranger as we are to a family member. But we’re ruthless towards ourselves! It is easier to feel natural compassion the further out we go from ourselves.

~Laura WoodwardLaura Woodward has been the surgeon at Village Vet Hampstead for over 10 years. Laura is also a qualified therapeutic counsellor and is affiliated with the ACPNL and the ISPC. She runs Laurawoodward.co.uk – a counselling service for vets and nurses

What is Self-Compassion?

So… What is Reiki?

• Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

• It is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

• The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

• The International Center for Reiki Training

Mikao Usui founded Usui Reiki while performing Isyu Guo, a twenty-one day Buddhist training course, at the top of Mount Kurama in

Kyoto.

During the process of developing his Reiki system, Sensei Usui summarized some of Emperor Meiji's literary works into a set of ethical principles, which later became known as the Five Reiki

Precepts.(Meiji was the 122nd Emperor of Japan, greatly revered by Usui)

just for today

The 5 Reiki Precepts

• Precept 1• Just for today, I will not be angry.

• Precept 2• Just for today, I will not worry.

• Precept 3• Just for today, I will be grateful.

• Precept 4• Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

• Precept 5• Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

Self-compassion, the fifth precept

~Self-compassion and the practice of mindfulness are interconnected.

~Awareness of our thoughts

~We can't practice self compassion if we aren’t mindful of our own

emotional or physical stresses.

It is increasingly becoming understood that mindfulness and self-compassion affect how we react, respond and relate to emotional distress.

Clinical research has shown that those who lack awareness of their suffering and distress and who lack self-compassion are often those who have difficulty coping with life’s stressors.

Resilience is the key

Back to Reiki…

• While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion.

• While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others.

• One must experience Reiki rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

The Attunement

• A Reiki attunement is the process by which a person receives the ability to give Reiki treatments. The attunement is administered by the Reiki Master during the Reiki class.

• During the attunement, the Reiki Master will touch the students head, shoulders, and hands and use one or more special breathing techniques. The attunement energies will flow through the Reiki Master and into the student.

• feel warmth in the hands, others may see colors .Most simply feel more relaxed.

Does Reiki Work?

According to the University of Minnesota, patients who have undergone a Reiki session have said:

• “I feel very refreshed and seem to be thinking more clearly.”

• “I think I fell asleep.”

• “I can’t believe how hot your hands got!”

• “I feel more relaxed than even after a massage.”

• “My headache is gone.”

But its not all magic

This is the work which takes us on our own healing journey towards a greater state of awareness, stillness and wholeness.

As Reiki teachers, it helps us to guide our students along the same path.

It is a journey of commitment. Commitment to the mastery of ourselves.
