Midwives and midwifery educators meeting in Second Life

0800 GMT2nd March 2008Kiwi Educators meeting placeKoru Island

Aims of this meeting

• To provide an opportunity for networking and collaboration for midwives and midwifery educators

• To explore possibilities of Second Life for midwifery meetings and conferencing

More aims for this meeting

• To identify possible opportunities this medium may present

• To identify possible barriers this medium may present

• To discuss possibilities for continuing collaboration of midwives and midwifery educators through this medium

Communities of practiceE-Mentoring

• Sarah (Petal) and I have an interest in online social networking for continuing professional development for midwives

• My interest arises from research into rural midwives informing practice– Information sharing through practice groups and

professional networks– Communities of practice were valued by

midwives

• Sarah is exploring supporting midwives in practice through E-mentoring

Could Second Life provide an opportunity for midwifery

professional development?• Second life is free, open and available

to anyone

• Would midwives be willing to gain experience in virtual worlds in order to gather and communicate?

• Takes a lot of time to gain skills before meaningful communication can occur

There are other software options for virtual meetings and conferences

• Elluminate• Vyew• Skype• Horizon• Wimba
