Martin Luther King Junior

SEGREGATIONWhen Martin was young there were laws

that kept white people and black people apart.

Martin worked very hard at school and won prizes for

making speeches.

Martin decided he wanted to change the laws that treated

black people unfairly. He became a church minister.

He studied hard and went to

University when he was only fifteen.

Martin married Coretta Scott.

When he graduated from

university he became Dr King.

In 1955 a black woman called Rosa Parks was arrested.

Dr King helped Rosa Parks. He organised a boycott.

Martin Luther King

admired Ghandi

who had led

peaceful protests in

India.

Dr King organised marches and protests.

He travelled to many cities and towns to make speeches about

treating people fairly.

Dr King often broke

laws that were

unfair to black

people.

He believed

in peaceful protest but was arrested

manytimes.

Even when he was in

jail, Dr King wrote books and letters to try to get

laws changed.

I HAVE A DREAM

famous speech to

250 000 people at the

Lincoln Memorial in

Washington on 28th August

1963.

“ I have a dream that little black boys and

little black girls will be able to join hands with little white

boys and girls and walk

together as brothers and

sisters.”

WE SHALL OVERCOMEDr King received the Nobel Peace

Prize

He led a campaign to allow all black people to be able to

vote.
