Every year in Januarythe RSPB asks children to count the birds In their gardens, parks and schools
Do they ever notice the birds in their school playground? l Have they seen any birds today?l How many birds do they think might visit their school?
6
Why do you think the RSPB asksfor your help counting birds?

notice whats happening across the UK
...collect birdwatching data from all around the UK, including which birds are seen the most.We can compare this to what we found out in last years Big Schools Birdwatch, and see if anything has changed.
If we do it ourselves every year, we might notice things in our our area and want to do something about it if were seeing less.
If birds ae doing well, other animals are probably doing well too
Birds play an important part in the ecosystem as many plants rely on them for seed dispersal. They keep the population of the living creatures that they feed on under control too, such as slugs and flies. l Birds are also important in the food chain because they are food for mammals and larger birds of prey.

...work out what birds are in trouble, andthen do work to help them.Birdwatch results, and other studies of birds, showed us that house sparrow numbers dropped in the UK between1977 and 2008.
As a result of this data we have taken action to help and raise awareness of declining house sparrows and starlings. l Case study: In towns and cities, one reason that house sparrow numbers may be dropping could be because they are struggling to find enough insects to eat and to feed their chicks. To help house sparrows in London, the RSPB and our partners have planted more long grasses, wildflowers and plants that produce lots of seeds in some parks there. More plants should mean more insects for the birds! You can find out more about the London House Sparrow Parks Project by visiting: rspb.org.uk/whatwedo/projects/species and searching under house sparrow.

There are things that will help you work out what bird you are looking at.You can identify them from how they look and sound.

Choose a time of day thats convenient for you. Youll probably see more birds if you do it early in the morning, but any time of day you can do it is useful for us.To make it easier for you, weve extended the event to 2three days. Make yourself comfortable and watch the birds in your 3 garden for an hour. Record the highest number of each bird species that you see at any one time. Then answer the other questions about other wildlife species that visit your garden during the year. Fox, hedgehog, stag beetle, mole, slow wormDont worry if you dont see anything over the hour, as its still really useful information. Good luck with your Birdwatch! 5 Let us know what you see. You can go online at rspb.org.uk/birdwatch or use the survey form. Remember to share your wildlife news using #biggardenbirdwatch 16
