Message from the Principal
CYBERSAFETY On Monday, a small group of Montrose parents were fortunate to experience an informative presentation on Cybersafety. This was given by Lesley Harrison, a teacher from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Some of the important points that came from the presentation were:
Many primary school children are involved in social networking – on sites such as Facebook, Club Penguin, Minecraft and Tour of Duty.
Some of these sites have age restrictions such as Facebook (13+) and Tour of Duty (15+).
It is really important that parents ensure that their children know WHO they are “allowing” as friends onto these sites – if they don’t know someone, then delete them.
A “Digital Profile” can be built up over time of your child: whatever your child uploads (photos, text) is permanently kept in cyberspace, and can be accessed by anyone, including prospective employers etc.
Parents should ensure that their child’s privacy settings on social networking sites are set to the “maximum” level, otherwise details such as name, address and phone number could be given to anyone.
Cybersafety is not just a high school issue.
Further information about any of the above can be obtained by going onto the Cybersmart website.
Yesterday afternoon our staff enjoyed the same program and found it to be a terrific experience. Our years 3-6 participated in their own session today. I encourage you to have a conversation about it over dinner tonight. Wayne Armstrong, Year 3 teacher, ICT committee Engaging with Asia On Sunday and Monday I had the pleasure of attending a state wide conference centering upon raising awareness of Australia and its links with Asia. Attendees came from State, Catholic and Independent sectors. Opened by Education Minister Martin Dixon, we heard the message that both federal and state governments support the need to raise understanding within our communities of the role Asia will play in the future. From this meeting networks have been created to assist teachers to develop meaningful links within our studies. Montrose will be sending 3 staff members on an educational tour along with ten other local schools in November.
