Jubilee Year of Mercy This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.
Alleluia! Easter is always, but especially in this Jubilee Year of
Mercy, the victory of God's gentle but invincible mercy raising up
Jesus, "faithful witness, the first-born of the dead" (Revelation
1:5), "first-born among many brothers [and sisters]" (Romans
8:29), conquering death in all its forms, in all of us in the human
family. In Luke's Vigil Gospel, heavenly messengers send the women forth:
"Remember what [Jesus] said to you" (Luke 24:6). In John's Gospel, the empty tomb
likewise "sends forth" Mary Magdalene, Peter, and the Beloved Disciple, who believe
though they do not fully understand. Finally, Luke's evening "Emmaus" Gospel sends
us forth, as "missionaries of mercy," assuring us that we will encounter the Risen
Lord, today and every day, in "the stranger" we meet along life's journey, in "the
Word that makes our hearts burn within us," and "in the breaking of bread" (see Luke
24:32, 35).

TODAY’S READINGS
Reading 1 ACTS 10:34A, 37-43
Peter proceeded to speak and said: “You
know what has happened all over
Judea, beginning in Galilee after the
baptism that John preached, how God
anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and power. He went about doing
good and healing all those oppressed by
the devil, for God was with him. We are
witnesses of all that he did both in the
country of the Jews and in Jerusalem.
They put him to death by hanging him on
a tree. This man God raised on the third
day and granted that he be visible, not
to all the people, but to us, the
witnesses chosen by God in advance,
who ate and drank with him after he
rose from the dead. He commissioned us
to preach to the people and testify that
he is the one appointed by God as judge
of the living and the dead. To him all
the prophets bear witness, that
everyone who believes in him will
receive forgiveness of sins through his
name.”
Responsorial Psalm PS 118:1-2,16-17,22-23
R. This is the day the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad.
or
R. Alleluia
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his mercy endures forever. Let the
house of Israel say, “His mercy endures
forever.” R.
“The right hand of the LORD has struck
with power; the right hand of the LORD
is exalted. I shall not die, but live, and
declare the works of the LORD.” R.
The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone. By the
LORD has this been done; it is wonderful
in our eyes. R.
Reading 2 COL 3:1-4
Brothers and sisters: If then you were
raised with Christ, seek what is
above, where Christ is seated at the
right hand of God. Think of what is
above, not of what is on earth. For you
have died, and your life is hidden with
Christ in God. When Christ your life
appears, then you too will appear with
him in glory.
Sequence - Victimae Paschali Laudes
Christians, to the Paschal Victim Offer
your thankful praises! A Lamb the sheep
redeems; Christ, who only is sinless,
Reconciles sinners to the Father. Death
and life have contended in that combat
stupendous: The Prince of life, who died,
reigns immortal. Speak, Mary, declaring
What you saw, wayfaring. “The tomb of
Christ, who is living, The glory of Jesus’
resurrection; bright angels attesting, The
shroud and napkin resting. Yes, Christ my
hope is arisen; to Galilee he goes before
you.” Christ indeed from death is risen,
our new life obtaining. Have mercy,
victor King, ever reigning! Amen.
Alleluia.
Alleluia C.F. 1 COR 5:7B-8A
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Christ, our paschal lamb, has been
sacrificed; Let us then feast with joy in
the Lord.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel JN 20:1-9
On the first day of the week,
Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early
in the morning, while it was still
dark, and saw the stone removed from
the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon
Peter and to the other disciple whom
Jesus loved, and told them, “They have
taken the Lord from the tomb, and we
don’t know where they put him.” So
Peter and the other disciple went out
and came to the tomb. They both ran,
but the other disciple ran faster than
Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he
bent down and saw the burial cloths
there, but did not go in. When Simon
Peter arrived after him, he went into
the tomb and saw the burial cloths
there, and the cloth that had covered his
head, not with the burial cloths but
rolled up in a separate place. Then the
other disciple also went in, the one who
had arrived at the tomb first, and he
saw and believed. For they did not yet
understand the Scripture that he had to
rise from the dead.

DID YOU KNOW? Not all predators fit a mold Many people mistakenly believe that predators fit into a mold, and that by teaching
children to avoid those kinds of people, they will be safe. Another common belief is
that an abuser or predator would most likely be a stranger, or a mean and scary
person. Not all situations follow this pattern. Parents should focus on teaching their
children how to handle uncomfortable situations, by getting away immediately and
going to a trusted adult. Parents should also keep watch for signs of abuse or distress in
their children. For more information on protection from abuser stereotypes and a copy
of the VIRTUS® article “A Step to Healing” email jvienna@la-archdiocese.org.
DRAWN INTO THE STORY "We are witnesses!" The scripture readings for Easter Sunday concentrate on
details reported by eyewitnesses. Listen carefully and you will be drawn into the
stories yourself. Peter reports the good works Jesus did, his death on the cross,
and his resurrection. The passage from John's Gospel has us running to the empty
tomb with Peter and John and peering inside to see the cloths used to cover
Jesus' body. Psalm 118 sums up our response: "It is wonderful in our eyes!"
What resurrection details do we see in our lives today? How have we died to our
old lives and been raised up again with Jesus? Let us pay attention to the new
life around us. It is wonderful in our eyes.

TREASURES FROM
OUR TRADITION
Fifty years or so ago, it was popular to
teach that every Sunday is a "Little
Easter." Today, after several decades of
intense liturgical reform, it is more
proper to think of today as a "Big
Sunday." On every Sunday of the year,
the Church is obliged to assemble,
keeping the day holy. In most places,
we hardly attain the goal of gathering
all who are in Christ by baptism. Look
around today and see what a Big Sunday
looks like!
Our tradition speaks of remembering,
anamnesis, as the antidote to
"amnesia," the tragic forgetting of who
God is and who we are as God's most
beloved creation. On this Easter day,
we are at our very best. We remember
who God is, and we remember who we
are in God's eyes: beloved sons and
daughters, reborn to eternal life in
baptismal waters. We rekindle our
candles and reclaim our baptismal
promises. As a "Big Sunday," today also
reflects the character of festivity and
leisure that should mark every Lord's
Day. We wear "Sunday best" today, and
we may take some time, especially in
the northern states, to stroll through a
budding garden. It is truly a "Big
Sunday," and how different our lives
would be if we took its values and
traditions forward into all the Sundays
of our lives.
