PUBLIC TRANSPORT

BIOFUELS

Challenges and solutions

ELECTRIFICATION

Most important sustainability challenges for the HD transport sector

Local Emissions (Particles, NOx, etc)

Energy Efficiency

Emissions of fossil CO2

Engine technology – cleaning up our cities

Local Emissions

PARTICLES

NOx

Euro 6 Euro 5

Euro6 = close to zero harmful roadside emissions

AFTER ”CLEAN” VEHICLES

Only 3 ways to reduce CO2 from transport(with the side effect of reducing all emissions)

1. Smarter transport

2. Energy efficiency

3. Replace fossil energy with renewable

Annual transport of 15 million packages Before Today

252 bags

per pallet

360 flat packedpackagesper pallet

From bags to packages From 1 800 to 1 260 truckmovements

Using longer vehiclesFrom 1 260 to 800 truckmovements

Total savings of 1000 truck movements with ~33% reduction of CO2

Scania worked out an efficient logistics proposal with a customer and the Transport Authority

Improve transport efficiency

>60% more load than conventional articulated truck. With two trucks currently operating,

700 fewer truck movements per year+/- 100 tonnes less CO2 per year

+/- 600 kgs less NOx per year+/- 12 kgs less PM per year

Improve transport efficiency

Up to 16 more passengers than conventional 12 metre coach

+/- 90 tonnes less CO2 per year+/- 450 kgs less NOx per year

+/- 9 kgs less PM per year

Improve transport efficiency

Truck unladen weight = 13 tonnes

Gross vehicle weight Europe = 26 tonnes

Payload Europe = 13 tonnes

Gross vehicle weight Hong Kong = 24 tonnes

Payload Hong Kong = 11 tonnes

European standards would allow 18% extra payload resulting in up to 18% fewer trucks with resulting reduction in emissions while

freeing up roadspace

Euro6 and +2 tonnesTotal number of tippers in Hong Kong = +/-1000Reduction in CO2 per year = 18 000 tonnesReduction in NOx per year compared with EuroV = 212 tonnesReduction in PM per year compared with EuroV = 1.9 tonnes

Smarter and cleaner transport

Barriers for Mobility

37 cars and vans

13 light goods vehicles

6 minibuses

4 double deck buses

1 coach

1 heavy truck

BRT/bus systems

... the electricity comes from sustainable sources

… the technology is robust and durable

... the technology reduces the weight penalty of on board electricity ”storage”

... the environmental impact of new types of raw material is handled in a sustainable way

… the economics stack up

Electric vehicles?

Only if and when ...

Possibilities going forward

Finding ways to stimulate low

emission vehicles

– technology exist in the market place

Alternative energy/using waste

- vehicles exists to run on liquid biofuels as

well as gas
