We will explore several types of American writers in this class. The main goal of this class, as stated in the 11.3 SOL, is to have students makes historical connections with the writings. Students will hopefully develop an appreciation for American writers and their works. Students will deliver several presentations throughout the year. The presentations will express their ability to make these historical and cultural connections with the literature. They will also have the privilege to write at least three papers per quarter. In the spring, students will learn to write an effective research paper. I will guide the students through this year, knowing they will absorb a great amount of information. Although guided by the Virginia SOLs, my main goal this year is to increase the students’ knowledge of literature. I also want to encourage and sharpen their critical thinking skills; which will be made possible by examining literature. This class will require the students to put out effort, but I will surely be beside them each step of the way.
