Day of Remembrance

Rwandan GenocideApril 7 – July 15, 1994

• Definition:–the deliberate killing of people who

belong to a particular racial, political, or cultural group.

Genocide

• Rwanda is located in central/eastern Africa.

• It is made up of 3 different ethnic groups:– 84% Hutu– 15% Tutsi– 1% Twa

Background Information

• Who?–Tutsi and

moderate Hutu.–Perpetrated by Hutu

majority.• When?–April 7 to July 15 in

1994.

Background Information

• Traced back to colonial period of early 20th century.

• European colonists felt the Tutsi were racially superior to the Hutu.

• This led the minority Tutsi population controlling the country.

Origin of Conflict

• As the 20th century progressed, the Hutus began seeking more freedom and power.

• This was due to their overwhelming majority in the country.

Growing Tensions

• On April 6, 1994, the airplane carrying the Rwandan President and the Hutu president of Burundi was shot down killing everyone on board.

Spark that Lit the Fuse…

Hutu extremists are believed to responsible for

shooting the plane down.

• April 7, 1994 - the Hutu militia go house to house killing Tutsi and moderate Hutu.

• 1000s die on first day.• By mid-July, an

estimated 800,000 Rwandans are killed.
