From Peter the Great to Catherine Great education and literature flourished. From the years 1700 to 1725 a printing revolution occurred and 100 times more work was produced than in previous years. Although there were periods of scholarly decline between the death of Peter the Great and the rule Catherine the Great, there was a substantial cultural revolution from 1682 to 1796.

The first Russian newspaper that was published was the Vedomosti ( News) in 1702. Peter the Great edited the first issue himself.

Peter the Great also helped reform the Russian alphabet. His alphabet would be known as the civil Russian alphabet. AS of 1710 all works (except for religious texts) were to be use the new format.

Peter the Great took it upon himself to push the importance of education. In 1701 he opened the Moscow School of Mathematical and Navigational Sciences ad well as a medical school in 1706.

The University of Moscow opened in 1755 as the first Russian school of higher education. The two main supporters were Ivan Shuvalov and Michael Lomonosov. Although its first years in existence were difficult its opening showed promise.

By 1787 there were 312 school and 20,000 students.By 1770 there were seven major periodicals being published. Known for her pioneering for female education.

The Period from the Reign of Peter the Great to Catherine the Great witnessed a cultural

revolution. Education was being offered at a higher rate and being more greatly valued.
