ROMS vs HF Radar vs Drifters
in Lagrangian Frame?
Meeting with Charles
10/21/08
What Carter & Satoshi think
• Dong et al (in review)
ROMS against observations including HF radar vs drifters
In Eulerian Frame
Agree within 10’s % of difference
• Can nearshore site connectivity be accurately predicted?
Lagrangian validations may be useful
(to convince people who do not believe in models)
How to measure “accuracy”
• In terms of mean or realizations?
Mean is more predictable
• “True dispersal” = larval dispersal, pollutant spread, etc
Nearshore site connectivity
• We need some metrics that work for all methods
Statistical measures?
e.g., residence time, PDFs, connectivity?
Gaps in coverage among them
HF Radar Coverage
• Ohlmann et al (2006) show its accuracy against drifters
Issues: limited coverage & “gaps”

Surface Drifter Coverage
• Probably most accurately describe water parcel dispersals
Issues: spatio-temporal resolutions, not after 1999
Not many in the South of SCB
ROMS Coverage
• Best spatial & temporal resolution (1996 - 2003)
2004 - 2008 depends on support for Charles

Given gaps among observations & ROMS,
• What do we do?
We don’t know yet
Let’s start with what we can do...
Preliminary Results: Drifters vs ROMS
Comparison with Lagrangian PDFs
Q: What (how) should we do?
• Q: How do we collaborate?
