GICAGEORGIA INDEPENDENT
COLLEGE ASSOCIATION
Celebrating 60 Years
79,424. That is the number of students served by Georgia Independent College Association (GICA) member institutions—and impacted by your generosity. Celebrating its 60th year of service, GICA counts among its membership 26 private, not-for-profit colleges and universities located throughout Georgia. In addition to bricks and mortar campuses, many GICA members offer off-campus locations in communities across the state and on-line programs to make a high-quality private college experience accessible.
GICA member institutions serve a diverse student population: 55% are non-white, 16% are over the age of 25, and 40% receive Pell grants. Private colleges are committed to serving all students, regardless of socioeconomic background. To that end, GICA, along with its member campuses, raises millions of dollars in student scholarships each year. By investing in infrastructure to make college accessible and student aid to make earning degrees affordable, GICA members save the state of Georgia tens of thousands of dollars per graduating Georgia resident.
For 60 years, GICA has assisted private colleges in their goal of providing high quality learning environments for students of any socioeconomic background. GICA’s mission is to support the great work of its member colleges through advocacy, research, professional development, collaborative services and fundraising. 2015 was a year that built upon the foundation and partnerships forged in previous years. Highlights of the year include:
• More than $632,000 awarded in student scholarships.
• An historic increase of $2.2 million in the Tuition Equalization Grant awarded by the State of Georgia to each resident attending a private college.
• 13 member colleges formed the GICA Compliance Collaborative to reduce costs associated with federal law compliance.
• Continued partnership with the Technical College System of Georgia to expand beyond the 50+ course articulation agreement and to train staff on transfer student best practices.
• Emory University joined GICA’s membership.
• Participated in GA-AWARDS, the state longitudinal data system designed to assist education policy researchers to better evaluate and create educational policies across Georgia.
GICA and our member campuses appreciate the confidence in and support of the Governor, legislators and Corporate Ally Partners in the private, not-for-profit sector. Your continued support of student aid and scholarship programs is critical to giving students educational choice and meeting Georgia’s economic and educational goals.
Our 60th anniversary edition of Report to the Community is filled with information regarding each of our 26 private colleges, the ways in which GICA members collaborate and facts about the private college sector. We hope you enjoy learning more about us.
Sincerely,
James Mellichamp Dr. Susanna L. BaxterPresident, Piedmont College President, GICA and GICA Board Chair

chartered to grant degrees to women. Today it is regarded as one of
the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges and is consistently recognized
for academic excellence and affordability. Students attend from across
the U.S. and more than 20 countries. Wesleyan offers undergraduate
degrees in 31 majors and 28 minors, plus the option to self-design an
interdisciplinary major, as well as eight pre-professional programs
and a bachelor of science in nursing. Beyond academics, Wesleyan
offers a thriving residence life program, five NCAA Division III
athletic teams, a championship IHSA equestrian program, and
meaningful opportunities for spiritual development and community
leadership.
Young Harris College (YHC) educates, inspires and empowers students
to be capable, well-rounded leaders who aspire to goals that others may
think unattainable. Founded 130 years ago, YHC has been transformed
into a progressive model of liberal arts education, featuring innovative
academic programs, state-of-the-art facilities and competitive NCAA
Division II athletics. Nestled in the mountains of Northeast Georgia,
YHC provides an intimate setting that allows students and faculty to
work closely, forging relationships that endure well past graduation.

Professional Development Opportunities
Each year, GICA develops a robust calendar of professional
development programs. These programs are offered to key campus
groups to provide inexpensive, high-quality opportunities for
professional growth and development. GICA member institutions
place a high value on these training programs and find them to
be a cost-effective way for staff and faculty members to remain
current in their fields of expertise. Additionally, the programs allow
participants a forum to explore new solutions for issues that arise on
all campuses. GICA is committed to providing nationally-recognized
speakers for these professional development programs at a reduced
cost. In 2015, GICA held meetings for 341 participants from 26
member institutions including chief financial officers, information
technology directors, human resource directors, library directors and
chief student affairs officers. GICA also hosts state-wide meetings to
address timely topics of interest, such as complying with new Title
IX regulations or learning about updates to Clery Reporting. The
format of these meetings varies depending on the topic, and include
webinars, conference calls and in-person meetings.
ProcurementGICA’s members frequently collaborate to save money and increase
efficiency. Twenty-three companies participate in the GICA
Procurement Portfolio, which provides cost savings on a diverse,
broad range of products and services. GICA maintains membership
in two group purchasing organizations, the Coalition for College
Cost Savings and E&I, which increase member institutions’ access
to discounts offered through national contracts. GICA member
campuses spent over $11 million through the GICA procurement
program during 2015.
EverFi CollaborativeGICA’s member institutions collaborated to purchase a suite of
online wellness and prevention services from EverFi in 2015. This
agreement allows GICA institutions to purchase best-in-class online
programs to address the critical issues of high-risk drinking, sexual
assault, relationship violence, stalking and sexual harassment among
students, faculty and staff. GICA partnered with the University
System of Georgia to obtain deep discounts for all of Georgia
two- and four-year institutions of higher education. The pricing
collaborative also enables the higher education sector to use the
same Campus Climate Survey to assess attitudes and beliefs among
students and faculty regarding sexual assault and other safety
issues on campus.
Adobe CollaborativeGICA successfully executed an Enterprise Term License Agreement
(ETLA) with Adobe in 2015. GICA institutions aggregated their
student populations to negotiate and establish the three-year
agreement. The ETLA locks in a significantly discounted price for the
three year period and beyond. This is an unprecedented agreement
for GICA institutions, and very few group ETLA agreements exist for
independent colleges and universities in the country.
The Higher Education Systems and Services (HESS) ConsortiumGICA and eight member institutions assisted in forming The
HESS Consortium. This national effort is focused on
collectively lowering costs and increasing collaboration between
private colleges and universities in the area of administrative
systems and services. The consortium seeks new opportunities
for collaborative pricing of vendor software, consultative services,
software-as-a-service and cloud services.

GICA’s members view collaboration as a valuable way to work together to improve the efficiency of
their institutions, learn new ways of serving their key stakeholders and leverage their collective buying
power to decrease costs. GICA institutions collaborate in a variety of ways to enhance the educational
experience and operational efficiency of each campus. GICA raises funds to help defray the costs
associated with launching these collaborative endeavors.
Compliance Collaborative The Compliance Collaborative project continued to make great
strides in 2015. The Compliance Webinar Series was launched
and presentations were made to campus representatives on topics
including 403b compliance, conducting a biennial review of alcohol
and other drug prevention programs on campus, mitigating cyber
risk, and copyright and fair use compliance issues. Thirteen campuses
joined together to form the Compliance Collaborative Program
in 2015. A Steering Committee containing representatives from
the 13 campuses and GICA conducted a thorough search to hire
a Compliance Program Director. The initial focus of the program
will be on the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX, the Violence
Against Women’s Act and the Clery Act.
ScholarshipsGICA administers ten named scholarship programs, totaling over
$108,000 in scholarship assistance to students who attended a
GICA college or university. Additionally, GICA raises donations
to support student scholarships in addition to managing an
endowment. Together, more than $632,000 in scholarship aid was
distributed. With the assistance of these scholarships, students
are able to attend the GICA member institution that best fits
their academic, social and spirtual preferences and needs. Many
GICA scholarships are awarded to financially needy students who
might otherwise be unable to attend college. These scholarships
award financial assistance to deserving students and assist them in
achieving their education and career goals.
