Students will compare the time period of quiltmaking to their lives and compare quilt designs using geometrical mathematical concepts such as patterning and lines of symmetry.

· Write a dictation sentence applying “qu” where appropriate and adding correct capitalization and punctuation
· Communicate ideas for class KWL chart
· Listen and Watch the American Memory Quilt Introduction
· Compare and contrast his or her bedroom with one of 1934
· Contribute to discussion about inventions and how they have changed our lives
· Write to inform reader of today’s technologies and why he or she is thankful for those technologies
· Assess individual writing sample with simple rubric
· Observe various quilt patterns in photos
· Feel texture and name pattern of Crazy Quilt
· Listen as Guest Speaker (Jo Ellen Kendall) shares quilt info and exhibits
· Hear math geometry term and draw lines of symmetry in objects on worksheet
· View quilt photos and decide how many lines of symmetry, if any, are possible
· Complete a plus/delta evaluation chart about the unit
· Demonstrate by drawing in the lines of symmetry on the figures of the quiz (edHelper.com worksheet)

Day One:
· Teacher introduces spelling PowerPoint with QU wedding.
· Students pair into reading partners to apply qu sounds to isolated words.
· Students record unknown spelling/vocabulary words and use print or on-line sources to seek definitions
· Students assess collaboration and project completion with simple rubric
Day Two:
· Spelling Pre-test on QU wordsTeacher Introduces Crazy For Quilts PPT
· Teacher Records Ideas for K and W columns of KWL chart

Day Three:
· Mid Week Activity on QU words to reinforce that all words start with “qu”
· Teacher will review KW portions of KWL chart and any other ideas
· Teacher will continue on Slide #5 of Crazy for Quilts PPT
· Students will listen to interview/descriptions of certain quilts such as crazy quilt
· Students will view bedroom from 1900’s and fill out Venn Diagram note page and Venn Diagram to compare and contrast his or her bedroom with the one belonging to Mr. Ryland’s daughter.
· Day Four: Teacher continues on Slide #9 of Crazy for Quilts PPT leading discussion about inventions and how they have changed our lives for the better. Slide photos illustrate limited material available to Americans and specify difficult situations that are taken for granted in today’s technological times.
· Teacher hands back each child’s Venn Diagram and students receive instruction to write to inform the reader of today’s technologies and why he or she is thankful for these technologies.
Day Five:
· Spelling Post-test on QU words
· Teacher explains rubric used to assess Venn/Diagram and Informative Writing
· Student continues writing activity allowing peer assistance for questions and editing.
· Student assesses own writing with Venn Diagram/Be Thankful! Rubric.
Day Six:
· Graph results of pre and/or post tests on QU words
· Teacher shares quilt personal Crazy Quilt and takes questions in show and tell format.
· Teacher takes thumbs up/thumbs down survey of those who could explain line of symmetry to the class.
Day Seven:
· Teacher introduces term “line of symmetry” with Lines of Symmetry PPT (Slides 1-5)

Day Eight:
· Guest Speaker shares quilt pattern info and personal exhibits while students use symmetrical spectacles (hands) to look for lines of symmetry.

· Teacher leads discussion of Lines of Symmetry PPT (Slides 6-20)
Day Ten:
· Teacher records ideas generated by class for the “What Have You Learned?” portion of the KWL chart using Lines of Symmetry PPT (Slide 21) as a visual on overhead monitor
· Students record answers for the Plus/Delta chart about specific likes and dislikes of the unit
Day Eleven:
· Students take quiz working individually to draw the lines of symmetry on the figures of the edHelper.com worksheet.
· Teacher shows Enrichment Art and Language Arts Options as students finish and hand in their quizzes.

Mrs. Shotbang with her four children she delivered herself. Husband broke his foot early this spring. About time baby was to be born they ran short of coal and bed clothing, Mrs. Shotbang had to take care of the newly-born baby and the rest of the family, cutting fence posts for fuel. The family almost froze; no mattresses on the beds this past winter, only quilts over the hard springs.
